SalihorskSoligorsk – As per WP:commonname, it will be much more reasonable and beneficial to use a more widespread official spelling of the city - Soligorsk, this spelling/name is much more used in Belarus itself, as well as abroad from what I know. Soligorsk name is used by officials in Belarus on the official website of the city: official website of the Soligorsk city. Google Books Ngram Viewer: Soligorsk is also much more popular. City's football team uses the spelling - Soligorsk FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk. And just from the perspective of a simple Belarusian citizen (me) who lived in Belarus his whole life, I can tell you, that people as well as officials use the name/spelling pretty much 99 percent of the time, but hey, I obviously might be wrong, who knows, if you're interested and my reasons are not enough, do your own research and see for yourself, let's figure it out together and make Wikipedia better, peace and love. • Comment WP:PLACE has this to say: Major cities (voblast capitals) are named according to the most common English usage. All other settlements are named according to national rules (exceptions may be discussed case by case). Soligorsk/Salihorsk is not a capital city, so the default would be "Salihorsk" (as per WP:BELARUSIANNAMES) unless WP:COMMONNAME overrules it. The rules as they exist today are problematic because they do not necessarily reflect the real-life common name (Russian is the default in most of Belarus.) I invite all interested editors to join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Cyrillic), as I believe this policy needs improvement. 162.208.168.92 (talk) 16:07, 14 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. This is basically a repeat of the recent Talk:Haradnichanka#Requested move 29 January 2021, with the same key argument that Belarus or, for that matter, even Ukraine or Moldova, should be considered as primarily Russian-speaking countries, with a minority press, radio, television or films using the local language and that, by extension, the names of its inhabitants (or at least inhabitants who consider themselves to be Russian speakers), places, geographical features, historical aspects, etc, should be transliterated into English using Russian forms. However, since Wikipedia does adhere to WP:BELARUSIANNAMES or WP:UKRAINIANNAMES, then unless there is a WP:COMMONNAME English exonym, such as Minsk or, for Ukraine, the now-established-as-an-English-exonym Kyiv, rather than the former exonym Kiev, then Belarusian names that do not have an English common name, would be expected to follow WP:BELARUSIANNAMES. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 02:49, 15 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
