Architecture

The article claims that the Octane is a SMP machine, but since it also claims that it was based on the Origin 2000, this should not be the case. If the HEART ASIC is the same as the Hub ASIC used in the Origin 2000, then the two processors 'sharing' the one 'bus' should run in a multiplexed fashion like the Origin 2000. Also, I think that there are two points that need to be clarified: Xtalk, I believe, refers to the I/O subsystem architecture, not the system architecture itself. The XBOW ASIC is not the heart of the Octane, that would be the HEART ASIC. The XBOW ASIC is the same as that used in the Origin 2000, and that is just a crossbar that routes XIO packets. memory subsystem

The text used to say:

The Octane supports 256 MB to 8 GB of system memory, using proprietary 200-pin DIMMs. There are two system board revisions. The first revision (part number 030-0887-003, easily distinguished with its black handle) supports 2 GB of RAM, while the second (part number 030-1467-001, with a silver handle) allows up to 8 GB. The memory subsystem has vast reserves of bandwidth that can be directly served by the Xbow router to any XIO card.

Cray CX1

I removed the link to Cray CX1 - Octane and Octane2 are totally different. If an Octane III article will be created it should be linked to the CX1. GL1zdA (talk) 15:47, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

SMP vs. "Multiprocessor"

I changed the reference to SMP to multiprocessing. AFAIK, "SMP" refers to an Intel specification - the Octane is based on the Origin 2000 which has as much to do with Intel as grapefruit has to do with Toyota. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.65.91.78 (talk) 06:47, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Octane's audio system

The audio system in the Octane is really top-notch. I'm not a golden-ethernet cable audiophile by any stretch, but the sound quality on this machine is just simply supurb. Easily a peer to Hammerfall-type hardware and I wouldn't be surprised if Octane can one-up RME on latency given the Origin vs. PC roots of this system.

This is such a "sleeper" computer and I'm suprised there really isn't any type of "community" around these machines like the Amiga, etc. 24.51.217.118 (talk) 17:39, 20 August 2015 (UTC)
