Proposed Edits To Page edit

This current page is outdated. I have a conflict of interest so I cannot edit this page directly. Instead, I will propose edits below (which were flagged to me by current staff at the organization). The proposed edits are supported by reliable references, written in a neutral manner, and are intended to update this page and provide correct information. Please feel free to verify and adjust text as needed.

Title: The page title should be updated to "Royal Canadian Institute for Science", as it has not been called RCI for a while (decades?). See https://www.rciscience.ca/ for verification.

Infobox: The President is now Dr. Suzanne MacDonald. See https://www.rciscience.ca/ for verification.

Lede/Opening Paragraph:

  1. Amend to add in RCIScience i.e. "The Royal Canadian Institute for Science (RCIScience), known also as the Royal Canadian Institute..."
  2. The organization now self-describes its mission as "provide a platform for public engagement with leading scientists, to foster critical thinking, expand science dialogue and promote informed decision making." (Source: https://www.rciscience.ca/mission)

History:

  1. The final sentence ("It is now the oldest scientific society in Canada.") is missing a supporting source. Here is one: https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/royal-canadian-institute

Journal:

  1. The original sentence states: "The Institute regularly published a journal, 'the Canadian Journal', by various titles 1852–1878, as Proceedings 1879–1890, Transactions 1890-, etc., to the present time." This journal is no longer being published. The proposed edit here is: "The Institute regularly published a journal, 'the Canadian Journal', by various titles 1852–1878, as Proceedings 1879–1890 and later Transactions 1890–1969 (https://www.rciscience.ca/)."
  2. I would like to propose two new sentences: "The Royal Canadian Institute Centennial Volume, published in 1949, summarizes one hundred years of science in Canada and the history of the Royal Canadian Institute, 1849-1949. (https://books.google.ca/books/about/The_Royal_Canadian_Institute_Centennial.html?id=zXZRAQAAIAAJ&redir_esc=y)  Since 2018, RCIScience has published an annual magazine for the public, featuring interviews and articles with scientists across Canada.(http://magazine.rciscience.ca/).

Awards:

  1. Change RCIS to RCIScience.
  2. Here is a new addition to update the text: "The Sir William Edmond Logan Award was created in 2015 as a companion to the Fleming Medal to recognize the contribution that an organization (rather than an individual) has made to increasing science culture in Canada through communication of science (https://www.thesudburystar.com/news/local-news/laurentian-science-north-take-home-award)."

A new proposed section - Activities - to describe what RCIScience does:

RCIScience first started hosting public lectures on the University of Toronto campus starting in 1913 (https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/royal-canadian-institute). Since then, RCIScience has expanded its activities to include in-person and online events, and novel initiatives such as Science is a Drag (which was recognized a finalist in the global 2022 Falling Walls Summit Science Breakthrough of the Year award, Science Engagement category). In 2021, RCIScience received the NSERC Award for Science Promotion, which recognized organizations "who make an outstanding contribution to the promotion of science in Canada" (https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Media-Media/NewsDetail-DetailNouvelles_eng.asp?ID=1329).

Happy to chat further if any of these edits are not appropriate! Soulsinsync (talk) 22:54, 24 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
