Trying to learn something about rowing

First question, why is the chart at the bottom of the article labeled "consolation final?" It looks to be the final final which yielded a gold medal to the Americans. Anyway, that is probably just a mistake, and I don't know how to fix it, or even if I am correct in assuming it is a mistake, so I will leave that to others. The second question is about the length of the race. Today, boys in Florida, USA are competing for the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association State Championship and are making times hovering around five minutes, whereas in 1963 these Olympic gold medalists were making times around six minutes. Have the athletes improved that much over a half-century, or was the Olympic course longer than 2K? I will be watching here for enlightenment. Thanks.
