Pretty good article, though there are a few things wrong in the Oilpatch Roughneck section. The Derrickhand does not catch the samples, the worm does this job. Many if not most land based drilling rigs have only a four man crew, so the motorhand, which is more commonly called the Motorman, is the chainhand as well. Throwing the spinning chain is not illegal.

Hollywood Marines

only problome I have is the LOW SKILL or "stuped" steriotype that you put on roughnecks.....you rebuild a chain drive rotory table then say anything about the skill level of roughnecks. In addition to that most modern rigs are diesel electric. I.E. lots of electronic skills are needed. As any long term oil field employee knows getting a job out here is one of the hardest jobs to get and keep. You litalraly sign a contract saying "the company is not responsibal for my death and work is never promised". There is a reision it's called "ROUGHNECKING". Next time it's 35F out side and rain/ sleeting ....step out side for 10 min. then imagin stainding there for 12+ hrs. straining your body to it's limits and knowing if you don't pre think and preform your job spil second timing every sec of the day you may not go home to see your family.......well then you may have a taste of the type of MAN you must be to work in this feild. A american roughneck should recive the same respect as military men.......we risk our lifes and health for years and years to free america from controle of mid-east oil countries. common usage of the term

I think it should be noted that the term has evolved into the more general definition of anyone (usually masculine) who works a difficult and potentially dangerous blue collar job as well as anyone who fits that description and attitude whether they actually work in such a profession or not. Tours pronunciation as “towers”
