Name

The article states: "Carlin,formerly Carlin motorsport...". If the team was formerly had the motorsport at the end, surely the article shouldn't be called Carlin motorsport. I propose the name: Carlin (British racing team). Thoughts? BMB YT 500000 (talk) 13:40, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

@BMB YT 500000: This is a fair request. It could be argued, however that the former name "Carlin Motorsport" remains the commonly recognized name and that this is why the page remains at this title, in addition to providing natural disambiguation without having to use brackets. I have the feeling that there will soon be a Requested move made in the future based on the recent ownership change, so look out for that. That's irrelevant in the face of the policy requiring articles to be at a title which is commonly recognizable. Wikipedia is a reflection of the sources, not what influences them. "Rodin Carlin" simply isn't yet. - "Ghost of Dan Gurney" ^{(work / talk)} 14:24, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

Ownership is not permanent, and it's also not relevant. The owner of Carlin is Capsicum Motorsport Ltd. Before Rodin came in, Max Chilton's father was the majority shareholder of Capsicum for 13 years. These things are bound to change. Rodin Cars remains its own thing, Carlin remains its own thing. This is not a name change or a merge per se - it's a rebrand that results from a partnership between Trevor Carlin (company director) and David Dicker (now CEO). So unless "Rodin Carlin" becomes the WP:COMMONNAME (which takes a lot of time) and not just a commercial name, the page shouldn't be moved. MSport1005 (talk) 14:30, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

Splitting proposal

I propose that we split this article into "Carlin Motorsport" and "Rodin Motorsport". Given Carlin's 27-year history, competition history across multiple categories and amount of success, it should have its' own article outlining that - a separate article is created for Rodin, outlining the company history (Rodin FZED etc.) and its' buyout of Carlin. The split of Campos Racing and Addax Team is a precedent we can follow. MSportWiki (talk) 22:42, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

I feel like it's a bit too early to make a proper judgement on this, but I like the idea of an independent article for Rodin Cars. However, I'm not sure the Campos/Addax buyout is a comparable precedent – Agag took over the GP2 squad (akin to the recent Virtuosi/Invicta rebrand) but Campos continued racing in lower categories. Agag later entered GP3 on his own and ended up selling the latter to Trident and the former back to Campos. MSport1005 (talk) 23:23, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

A Rodin Cars article with its' motorsport divison and results included would be a good idea. However, I'm not referring to Campos/Addax ownership history; rather the article history. If you look at Campos, its' article was originally created as a redirect to Addax before being converted to a proper article. MSportWiki (talk) 22:06, 21 January 2024 (UTC)

Not really, it's just the personnel and premises that carried over. Look at Stone Brothers Racing versus Erebus Motorsport; Erebus took over most of SBR's staff and their Gold Coast base when they entered V8 Supercars (2013) despite already having their own, it's the same thing here. It's not a carryover of anything, it's a transfer of power that's resulted in a name change. The company is exactly the same and if the Carlin name hadn't been dropped we wouldn't be considering this split. That's what arouses my doubts – as much as I like the idea, Carlin Motorsport isn't dead, it's just changed hands and name. MSport1005 (talk) 13:46, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Exactly. Trevor Carlin just sold his stake in the team, and now the team has been renamed. The team is still exactly the same. There's no need for a split. It's not like the team has merged with another team to become a new entity either, so again I don't think a split is necessary. SteeledDock541 (talk) 03:48, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

How about we make a draft page for Carlin Motorsport and use Rodin Motorsport as a base. Then when it is ready, we put Carlin Motorsport on Wikipedia. DualSkream 19:45, 2 April 2024 (EST)
