Traditional?

edit

I think that more research needs to be done on this page. If anyone knows the creation myth for the Maori religion, please post it! —Preceding unsigned comment added by ZainabLove (talkcontribs)

Oh totally - this article doesnt begin to cover the subject, and one day some one will expand it with some decent info. In the meantime, the creation myth is at Rangi and Papa. Kahuroa 05:29, 21 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think a distinction needs to be made between 'traditional Maori religion' and 'religions followed by Maori'. Its not clear from the article what Maori believe now. Perhaps when this is expanded the structure could be something like:

  • Traditional Maori religion (bulk of article)
  • How this was affected by the coming of Christianity
  • Maori Christian movements - Ringatu, Pai Marire etc (brief explanation, and links)
  • Traditional Maori religion today (ie most Maori don't follow the old religion but many still pay attention to tapu and so forth) --Helenalex 05:14, 15 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

More information on why this: "Māori enthusiastically embraced Christianity and its concepts and adapted them to their culture" -happened would be good. :) 125.238.90.252 11:12, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Categories

edit

I undid a recent change to the categories since I am not convinced that the change was well meant, given that it was made during a minor spate of irritating small changes. Kahuroa 06:08, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Religion in New Zealand

edit

I discovered a short article about changes in religion in the NZ census and wondered why such an article existed with no major page on religion in NZ. So I changed the name and fleshed it out a little. It now includes a summary (which I copied from here), but this needs to be rewritten. Maybe someone who works on this page (Kahuroa?) can improve it a little. Richard001 04:20, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Edited it a bit. This article here is deficient - it mentions nothing of Māori christian religions such as Ratana, Hauhauism, the prophets of the 19th and early 20th centuries and so on. Kahuroa 08:20, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Destiny Church has had a large impact on Maori religion???

edit

I have deleted the following section:

In recent years the fundamentalist Destiny Church founded by Brian Tamaki has also had a large impact[1].

Of the hundreds of thousands of Maori in this country, only a few have become involved with Destiny Church. To say that it has had a "large impact" sounds like Destiny Church propaganda to me. 121.73.7.84 (talk) 04:45, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tangihanga

edit

Tangihanga actually used to take weeks so that people had time to travel to the destination. The length of time was reduced to three days due to a health initiative. Bodies couldn't be left exposed for that long because they would rot over time. (Xu Davella (talk) 13:45, 13 September 2008 (UTC))Reply

Mormonism

edit

I'm just passing through as a reader and have a comment.. There are 2 Mormon(LDS)-related links in the links section. But there is no mention of Mormonism in the article. --MissGarbo (talk) 16:10, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Māori religionReligion of Māori people – Open to another title suggestion but the current title implies this is an article on the the Maori religion rather than being about the different religious beliefs held by Maori people. Redirect would probably need to be re-targetted but only after all incoming links have been updated Traumnovelle (talk) 05:44, 27 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
