Rarefaction waves (math.)
editMathematically speaking, rarefaction waves can refer to diverging 'characteristics'. Although the 'density' of characteristics in the space considered may be decreasing, the actual density (mass/volume) of the underlying physical system described by the characteristics could be doing anything at all.
