Talk:Rainbow jersey

Latest comment: 3 years ago by 62.216.5.216 in topic Unofficial uses

After the end of a rider's championship year, they are eligible to wear piping in the same rainbow pattern on the collar and cuffs of their jersey. They retain this right for the remainder of their career, and like the jersey it can only be worn in the same discipline and speciality in which the title was won.

If this is a UCI regulation, then it isn't enforced enough. For example, Michael Rasmussen won his World Championship in mountain biking, however, he wears the rainbow collar and cuffs on his Tour de France road cycling jersey (when he isn't in polka dots, of course).

In addition, some World Champions neglect to wear the rainbow collar and cuffs even when they are entitled to do so. Sometimes Lance Armstrong had them, sometimes he did not. It seems to be a matter of personal preference.

Actually, the guidelines have changed, guideline 1.03.64 does not address the topic of piping anymore (have a look for UCI's "Rider's appareal" document). I agree with the people who stated that e.g. Michael Rasmussen always wore his pipings even though he has been a mountain bike champion; I vividly recall Danny Nelissen, the last amateur WC, to always have worn his pipings too, and a bunch of others (O'Grady used to wear them for having been a track WC). So I am going to delete the reference because at the moment we can't be sure and better to have no reference to it than one that is possibly wrong. Laxrippe (talk) 14:14, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

The Curse of the rainbow jersey is a common excuse for World Champions. It seems that World Champions incur more injuries, mechanicals than any other rider.

where are those "notes" linking to? cite your sources --Tir38 21:38, 30 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The don't link anywhere - they are references to the relevant UCI regulations. That's what's called citing a source. If you want to check them then you can look them up in the UCI regulations binder, or search on the UCI website.136.2.1.101 13:03, 14 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I see. They are linking to farther down on the page. Tir38 04:50, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

The curse

Ballan and the curse

edit

Alessandro Ballan hasn't had good season at all this year, a bad season to say the least. A worthy entry to the curse section? Imo, yes. Kweniston (talk) 23:09, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Unofficial uses

edit

"Rainbow jersey colors have been used unofficially by triathlon, speed skating and Crashed Ice world champions."

In speed skating, this has happened only once, in 1983, when the 1982 champion, Hilbert van der Duim, rode the 1983 World Championships in a rainbow suit. 62.216.5.216 (talk) 15:01, 12 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
