Incorrect data edit
I have done some research of this airfield and found several mistakes in the limited data. I have no idea how to edit so am posting here.
1. "RAF Tilshead / Shrewton was controlled by No. 38 Wing RAF and was used as a relief landing ground (RLG) for fighters". Incorrect, RAF Tilshead was handed back to the Army in Dec 1941, 38 Wg (later 38 Group) was formed in 42 so 38 Wg could not have had anything to do with Tilshead. Yes it was a RLG from 1924 but RAF Tilshead was formed in 1940 with the arrival of 225 Sqn in July with Lysanders, not fighters. RAF Shrewton (some miles to the east) was not part of RAF Tilshead as far as I can see.
2. "The airfield also provided initial training period for the Glider Pilot Regiment providing basic flying training.[6]". Incorrect, GPR initial training was at the airbourne camp north of the village and that only opened in 43 by which time the US Army had possession of the former RAF Tilshead. The link supplied clearly states "After the initial training period at Tilshead, he went to RAF Booker for flying training." That is to say he did the equivalent of P Company at Tilshead and then went elsewhere to learn to fly, and of course RAF Tilshead was closed by 43.
3. Tilshead was used by 225 Sqn from 1 Jul 40 to Aug 41 as a base for anti-invasion patrols, searching the south coast for enemy activity.
