edit1964 Mississippi epicenter of Freedom Summer, a massive effort to educate and register African-American voters
editWhat’s weird is that the first test (code-named “Salmon,” by the way) took place in 1964 – the same year that Hattiesburg was also the Mississippi epicenter of Freedom Summer, a massive effort to educate and register African-American voters in the South. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to locate the exact date of the 1964 atomic explosion, so hold off for now about plots to irradiate Freedom Summer volunteers (what really happened, with cruder weapons, was bad enough).
(I first learned about the Mississippi atomic tests from “Places the United States Has Bombed,” by artist/photographer elin o’hara slavick. Also check out her photos of the military community at Fayetteville, N.C., site of Fort Bragg -- some of her work on Fayetteville was featured in the “Missiles and Magnolias” issue of Southern Exposure.)
Copeland gang section
editThe section on The Copeland Clan was deleted from the Purvis, Mississippi page for two reasons. First, the association between Copeland and Purvis/Lamar County appears to be in error. The section states that the Copeland clan waited for James Harvey "on Red Creek in 1848" in the "the southwest corner of then Perry County (now Lamar County)". Although the quote is accurate from Pitt's book, the "(now Lamar County)" is not. Lamar County was formed from Marion County—not Perry. Instead, current-day Forrest County was formed from the western section of Perry County, where the battle occurred. Thus, the Copeland section largely loses its link to Purvis and Lamar County. Although Copeland was no doubt active within the general region, every city in southern Mississippi cannot have a Copeland section. Second, a page for James Copeland existed when the Copeland section was created for Purvis in July 2009; this causes unnecessary duplication on Wikipedia, which is not a good utilization of resources (see WP:Duplicate articles). The James Copeland page, which was recently revised, covers essentially the same material that is covered on the Purvis, MS page. Some of the Copeland material and references that were included on the Purvis page were subsequently used (merged) to supplement the James Copeland page in its revision.
Should a better link be established between Copeland and Purvis, it is suggested that a short summary statement be included on the Purvis page establishing the link with referral to the Copeland page via a "{Main|James Copeland} tag". Pinethicket (talk) 12:40, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
