My oh my. The lack of (decent) references is staggering. One can expect no less from a ufo-related wikipedia article... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.82.95.82 (talk) 16:53, 8 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

One would usually expect that from a UFO sceptical article, with only sources from such unreliable charlatans as Klass. Stop shilling you anonymous coward.

Terrible article , constantly using the term UFO's to imply flying saucers or visiting aliens without actually saying it.

It has questions like "are UFO's real?" well anything you cant identify 100% is unidentified, anything to far off in the distance is unidentified. So yes UNIDENTIFIED objects are real but that doesnt make them visiting aliens like this article implies. Please correct this and put some credibility back into this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.51.153.117 (talk) 19:59, 20 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Fringe "project" while a major one is not on Wikipedia edit

What a diversion! From 1953 the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office surveyed the oceans charting the planet's magnetic field. The project used aircraft and, after the development of the proton precession magnetometer from ships. The mission stated from the 1966 report covering early days, U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office Geomagnetic Surveys 1953 — 1965:

The U. S. Naval Oceanographic Office has been conducting geomagnetic investigations of ocean areas since the initiation of Project MAGNET surveys in 1953. These world-wide airborne surveys provide information for computing and charting all elements of the earth's magnetic field. With the introduction of the proton precession magnetometer, total magnetic intensity measurements could be made routinely from steel-hull ships. Shipboard magnetic surveys have been conducted by this Office since 1957. The information derived from these airborne and shipboard magnetic surveys is necessary to provide for safe navigation of ships and aircraft, to meet special Naval requirements, and to support the scientific research programs of the United States.

The early aircraft was a Super Constellation, nicknamed Roadrunner. Then came several P-3 Orions that flew low level magnetic surveys worldwide. The geophysical ships operated by the office also conducted magnetic observations in the geophysical survey suite. A look at the surveys listed in the 1966 report will show many ship names covered here on Wikipedia. Then some out there begin conflating this UFO thingy with the big U.S.N. project with one UFO site showing a photo of one of the aircraft as a UFO investigation asset. Idiocy.
