NPOV

edit

Phrases used in this article appears to read more like an advertisement than a factual document. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PhuryPrime (talkcontribs) 14 November 2006‎

The information contained on the page appears to be verifiable so surely it's acceptable? Although "famous staff" doesn't sound like a suitable section name to me personally. Suriel1981 20:46, 16 February 2007‎ (UTC)Reply

Rankings

edit

Before re-editing the information about the 2006 Guardian rankings, please check the Guardian's web page; the Guardian made a number of embarrassing errors in its initial publication of the results. The rankings seem to have stabilised now and place Plymouth 40th - well below Exeter at 28th despite claims repeatedly made on this page by an anon. seglea 21:40, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the Guardian rankings, the 2007 rankings place Plymouth at 35th, so they indeed appear to have stabilised. Note that Exeter is ranked 34th in 2007, so perhaps anon was demonstrating a degree of prescience? However, any rankings of universities or academic departments ought to be taken with a grain of salt. Imogen27 09:57, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Chancellor

edit

Does UoP have a chancellor? -This is a ceremonial role, currently the University has only a vice-chancellor which is the highest role in the University. There is also a motto which is to be unveiled within the next few weeks with crest. RobertBFC 10:54, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Associated Institutions

edit

For what I've read, I guess the Greenwich School of Management (www.greenwich-college.co.uk) is an associated college? It does offer MBA Programmes from the University of Plymouth... Perhaps it would be worth mentioning all associated institutions in this article? --Pinnecco 15:08, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

If one is going to mention associated institutions I would like to see an outline of how they are associated please Jpe2015 (talk) 21:26, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

University ratings

edit

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. Change famous staff to notable staff

edit

I agree that 'famous staff' is not the right phrase. One also wonders why if there is a section on notable staff there is not one on notable students, though perhaps this would cause some problems for other universities such as Oxford and Cambridge. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.20.183.55 (talk) 11:26, 28 March 2007 (UTC). →Apart from Pat Butcher there aren't any notable students. Pat Butcher appears to be an alumnus of Rolle College Pre-incorporation with University of Plymouth Jpe2015 (talk) 18:46, 26 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

There are in fact, many notable former students. The problem is that due to the continual re-organisation and incorporation of other colleges, this gets lost. (talk) 21:27, 20 September 2014 (UTC)sorry - omitted to signJpe2015 (talk) 18:46, 26 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Recent Developments.

edit

It might be a good idea to have references for the costs of the new buildings, otherwise it just comes across a bit like an advert and not an encyclopedic entry.BananaNoodle (talk) 20:04, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Accommodation

edit

Is this section needed, it sounds a little to advertisment like for my liking. What do others think? BananaNoodle (talk) 23:01, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Anyone? I just think that a general audience is not really going to be interested in wether or not a particular halls of residence is en-suite. BananaNoodle (talk) 14:56, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

It might be useful for general knowledge? 141.163.180.70 (talk) 18:15, 3 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nothing wrong with it to my eyes. Other universities have pages just for the accommodation, so I don't see why it should be removed, perhaps just moved? Stuartpgardner (talk) 15:03, 16 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I will expand on this part of the article soon and then you can decide if it needs to be moved? International2008 (talk) 08:03, 18 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Now the article has been extended - do you think it needs moving or not? International2008 (talk) 16:14, 23 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

History

edit

I really doubt that the University of Plymouth absorbed "Tavistock College". What is the evidence for this? --Strathdon (talk) 16:20, 2 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Surely this statement is incorrect "The new university absorbed the Plymouth School of Maritime Studies and Tavistock College." as it stands this links to Tavistock College- a secondary school in Tavistock run by Devon County Council. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jpe2015 (talkcontribs) 21:21, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

"and Tavistock College" was added by an IP editor in Jan 2009. I agree it appears incorrect and there's no mention of Tavistock on http://www.plymouth.ac.uk/pages/view.asp?page=26069 so I've just deleted it. Qwfp (talk) 11:34, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

The History section looks like updating could be useful: making a note of a few references to help this process: will add to this list as time permits with a view to editing the page - all accessed 26th September 2014. Controversies

edit

IN 2014 the establishment seems to be mired in controversy, yet the mess is obscured in the history section. The rather expensive graduation chairs have also hit the news and this does seem to be notable. The West Country Challenge

edit

Would you like to win up to £250 in Amazon vouchers for participating in The West Country Challenge?

The The West Country Challenge will take place from 8 to 28 August 2016. The idea is to create and improve articles about Bristol, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, like this one.

The format will be based on Wales's successful Awaken the Dragon which saw over 1000 article improvements and creations and 65 GAs/FAs. As with the Dragon contest, the focus is more on improving core articles and breathing new life into those older stale articles and stubs which might otherwise not get edited in years. All contributions, including new articles, are welcome though.

Work on any of the items at:

or other articles relating to the area.

There will be sub contests focusing on particular areas:

To sign up or get more information visit the contest pages at Wikipedia:WikiProject England/The West Country Challenge.— Rod talk 16:33, 18 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
