If this definition of plaza as a shopping mall is true, than people in Europe, at least the Easter part of it live is a serious misconception...:)

Pronunciation

I don't know the best way to do this: the pronunciations we have are indeed the correct ones for Spanish, but they are not the standard ones for English, at least for Americans. In my area (Kansas City), it would be normal to pronounce it ['plæzə] or ['plazə]. I'd add this, but I'd like some other opinions first. --Xyzzyva 18:47, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Changed. This is an English-language encyclopedia, and the pronounciation [plaθa] shows a Castillian bias; the Latin American Spanish pronounciation is [plasa]. Sluggoster (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 05:35, 12 May 2009 (UTC).

I'm skeptical. It's related to flat (I guess), and may mean 'field' in Spanish (though I haven't encountered such a usage), but I strongly doubt that it's related to 'field'. —Tamfang (talk) 22:58, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Proposed merge with Pedestrian Plaza

Proposed merge into town square

It seems to me that a 'Plaza' is just a subtype of a 'Town Square', and the subjects described in both articles seem like they serve a similar purpose. The Spanish Colonial plazas described here fit squarely (ha) into the definition of the squares described on the town square article. The Plazas described as existing in the United States are also redundant to the descriptions in town square. I propose that we merge the articles under town square and copy over the information on Spanish-American Plazas as well as the list of Plazas, some of which are named 'square'.

I think a merge of Plaza is appropriate, but a good chunk of the text is specific to Plaza de Armas, a type of plaza with a specific history in Spanish/Spanish colonial urban planning that likely deserves its own page. Maybe merge the material here to either or both of town square and Plaza de Armas as appropriate?--Carwil (talk) 18:50, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

Proposed merge of Town square with Plaza

I've looked at these two articles over a couple of times now, and every time I read them, they seem to represent the exact same subject. In the articles' present states, they seem to not differentiate themselves from the other significantly enough to identify themselves as separate topics. Unless either information can be added to these articles illustrating how one is different from the other, I think the best action to serve our readers would be to merge the two articles. Support. When I've edited other articles and needed to refer to a public square, for example, I'm never sure whether to link to this one or to town square because I can't easily see a significant difference. Clearly there is a general concept of an open public square that should have its own single article, so I see no harm in merging them and I think it would consolidate all the relevant information.

One note though: I think "town square" is technically more specific (usually the important central square of a town) than the more generic "plaza" (which could be any public square). So arguably the former could be its own page that would be a subtopic of a more general topic like this one, but when reading town square it still seems like there is significant and perhaps unavoidable overlap (especially since generic terms like "public square" currently redirect there), so I think a merger is advisable as long as variable meanings are discussed and clarified, and have their own sections where necessary.
