pivalyl or pivaloyl group? edit
I think both names are commonly used, but what does the IUPAC say? Logically speaking, it should be pivalyl: benzoic acid gives rise to the benzoyl group, while acetic acid gives rise to the acetyl group. The rule is "-ic+yl" to go from the acid name to the acyl group name. For the name of the acyl group to be pivaloyl, the acid would have to be called *pivaloic acid, which afaik, is never used. Nevertheless, chemists are not always logical. Alsosaid1987 (talk) 06:48, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
