The OED (Compact edition 1971)does not recognize this use of "pitcher". A pitcher is basically a jug often of terracotta, from which grog is sometimes made, though presumably always from fragments (more properly shards, sherds or potsherds) of the vessel. Grog is sometimes known as sherd temper.See Rice, Prudence M. Pottery analysis: a sourcebook. Chicago: University of Chicago Press; 1987, p. 74 and elsewhere. I suggest therefore that this article be retitled Grog (ceramic material.

Just because the first contributor to this discussion has not heard of this use of 'pitcher' does not mean it is invalid.
