'Fart' theory

Doesn't this postulate that the name is given in a form which somehow predates Grimm's *p > f, but *t > þ has happened twice? The t of fart is a Germanic one, not a PIE one. Germanic *t is PIE *d or glottalised *t' (cf Greek πορδη). Koro Neil (talk) 10:23, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Translation

The correct translation of Peorð means a "Tanzbaum" (dancetree), a thing-tree . That is uralt traditional germanic ritual. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanzlinde

A Tanzbaum is a old tree (different trees, Linde, Buche, Ahorn, Apple it is all the same) what stay in the middle of a litte village and the village people makes her fest (thanksgiving fest, Oktoberfest, Maifest, Marriage fest or others) around this tree. Hearth

Another theory out there somewhere is that it means "hearth" (heorð), with the /p/ added just because they needed to find a word that fit in there somehow. If this theory is true, the choice of peorð is as arbitrary as cweorð. However, this theory cannot explain Gothic pairþra, so at most it was a folk etymology, not a new coinage. —Soap— 18:47, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

chesspiece

it could be a chesspiece, since ferz is a word for the queen in chess. But this theory is also weak, since chess was not widely known in western Europe when runes were used, and the runic name would be much older than chess if it is ultimately the same word as ceirt . The word for chess-piece is ultimately borrowed from middle-eastern languages, and it's very doubtful whether Chess was known in rune-using areas by circa 500 A.D... AnonMoos (talk) 23:27, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
