Let's talk about a couple of persistent Umar stories
editYou'll find two stories about Umar common on the web.
The first is that he ordered the destruction of the Great Library of Alexandria, based on prejudice against all books that weren't the Quran. This story is implausible for a bunch of reasons; it'd be nice to see it properly debunked here.
The second story touchingly contradicts religious bigotry of the first: supposedly Umar made a point of not turning the Church of the Holy Sepulchre into a mosque. Mentioned in that article, worth expanding on here. Isaac Rabinovitch (talk) 21:01, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
