Talk:Night Probe!

I added a small element to the criticism of the book. Frankly I've never liked the book much as it fails to comprehend the way that the Empire worked. Ah well, it's just a novel. Darkmind1970 14:07, 20 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I added a few words to the sentence describing the origin of the title to distinguish between the CLAIM made by a character in the novel and verified fact. Cussler's a bit like Ian Fleming in that he makes up some of his "facts". Not as egregiously as Fleming did, but he isn't as meticulous as many genre writers. This particular factoid, to use Mailer's word, needs to be verified and referenced to some credible source, before someone edits out my weasel words of skepticism. Maybe some cave divers have used the expression that way, but none of the ones I've dived with have. I am certified by 3 agencies, and have 30 years of experience in sport diving. I don't know everything (only almost ;-)) and "night probe" may be local usage somewhere, but show me some article in an an old issue of Skindiver that predates this novel, or some equally credible example of actual usage in this sense, not just usage in another work of fiction. If you can do that, put a ref on it and remove my edit. Otherwise, uncritical acceptance of Cussler's (excuse me, Pitt's) definition is inappropriate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.96.210.230 (talk) 01:44, 6 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
