Talk:Nial

Latest comment: 6 years ago by Harvestdancer in topic Change name of the page to QNial7

I wonder if this page might be improved. Nial is an interesting historical programming language. I ran across it when exploring APL family languages in the 1980s. My impression at the time is that it managed to be very clean and provide some good functional programming constructs over arrays while not depending on the special APL keyboard and avoiding overloading the punctuation characters (as J did). While I am not expecting a popular Nial revival any time soon, I do think it contains some useful ideas that may well inform the design of future array programming languages. It is really too important to forget. Jarrender (talk) 14:43, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Change name of the page to QNial7

edit

I would like to change the name of this page to "QNial7" in order to emphasize the GitHub project of that name that is carrying on the development of the implementation of Nial that I originally led at Queen's University. A new version of the source code for the implementation of Nial has been donated to the repository and all the documentation is now available there as well.

I have closed the company Nial Systems Limited that was using the domain nial.com and sold the rights to the name. This change will free up the topic name "Nial" for the use by the new owner of the domain name.

I would like help in achieving this change since I do not see a way to do it by editing the page. My intention is to retain much of the material of the current Nial entry in the QNial7 entry but change it to reflect the current state of its implementation.

Please advise me on how to proceed. 46will (talk) 01:03, 14 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Question. It appears that QNial7 is a subset of the overall Nial. I do not know if this is the case, you are the subject matter expert. Is QNial7 a specific implementation of Nial? Jason Harvestdancer | Talk to me 21:46, 14 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Nial is the language, QNial7 is latest version of the only implementation of Nial. I will make this clearer in the rewrite. 46will (talk) 18:25, 15 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
If QNial7 is the current version, then it does not appear to me that it is appropriate that this page be renamed to the current version. Mind, if the company "Nail Systems Limited" still exists, a page called "Nial Systems Limited" can be created to describe the company. Jason Harvestdancer | Talk to me 21:46, 20 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
