Move to "December 2022 Northern Ireland Assembly Election'

Have we been premature. This BBC report says we haven't yet hit the deadline requiring an election to be called and calls 15 December only a "likely date". The Belfast Telegraph also says we haven't hit the deadline yet. Bondegezou (talk) 15:01, 27 October 2022 (UTC)

We’ve now passed the deadline, yet Heaton-Harris hasn’t called an election and has arranged another round of talks. As can happen in NI politics, deadlines can become flexible. There is talk now of an election being avoided. It’s also possible that there is an election but it’s not on the likely date of 15 Dec, so it could move to Jan 2023. Move to "2023 Northern Ireland Assembly Election"

Considering an election will come by April 2023 at the latest, it seems to make sense to move this page to a title which reflects this. Any views? Quinby (talk) 18:16, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

Add Aontú to polling graphics and tables.

Aontú has polled at 1 and 2 percent in recent polls and attained 12,777 votes and (1.5%) so deserves a place. Rmoore666 (talk) 19:27, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

In terms of the graphic, on the one hand, Aontú are polling at a similar level to PBP, who are included, so I can see a case for them being treated the same. On the other hand, plotting the polling for these small parties who bounce around between 0-2% with sampling error doesn’t really convey anything useful to the reader. I think I’d favour removing PBP as my first choice, then adding Aontú as my second choice, with the status quo as third choice. Bondegezou (talk) 11:39, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

I agree with your preferences. Additionally, I would suggest removing "Others" from the graph, regardless of which option we're going for. I would say, it's the least useful part of the graph. If we don't include PBP and Aontú, Others are also polling in the same range and therefore the same argument applies. If we do include PBP and Aontú, at least the 0-2% range would be less loaded. I agree about removing Others. I note that the UK and Scottish opinion polling graphs don’t include lines for Others. The Irish graph includes a line for I/O, which is Independents and others, who are a kinda more distinct category in the context of the republic’s politics. I think that we should include Aontu for thw sole reason of the polling it has attained over the last number of months and of course we should take into consideration the fact that it would clutter the lower end of the graph. However, it may be helpful to show the large slump going from 2% to 0.2% in the same month and could provide a visual aid for that Rmoore666 (talk) 21:04, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

Where to cover the DUP boycott

Hi all. For a long time, it appeared as if the next Assembly election would be held early because of the failure to form an executive caused by the DUP boycott. We thus developed 11 paragraphs on text about that and the various steps taken to extend legal deadlines. However, it now appears that the DUP will enter into an executive, so the next Assembly election will just be on the normal schedule (2027). I was wondering whether this material is still best placed here. I can see 3 options.

1. Leave the material here.

2. Move the material to 2022_Northern_Ireland_Assembly_election#Aftermath and leave a short summary here. Government formation is generally covered on the preceding election's article, so it makes more sense there.

3. Create a new article on the DUP boycott with this material + more on what the dispute was actually about. Lengthy government formation processes often get their own articles (e.g. 2023–2024 Dutch cabinet formation) and there's plenty more to be said about the DUP boycott. Not certain exactly what the article should be called, however!
