The monks named the abbey dulce cor (Sweetheart Abbey), however, the village was named New Abbey because of the nearby Dundrennan Abbey.

Removed the second phrase as Dundrennan is 25 miles (by road) from New Abbey and it seems unlikely that the village would have been named for it. Also this page http://www.kirkcudbright.co/newabbey.asp suggests otherwise: This place, anciently called Kirkindar from the situation of the old church on an island in Loch Kindar, derived its present name from the foundation of an abbey which, in contradistinction to that of Dundrennan, was styled the New Abbey. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.67.16.225 (talk) 22:13, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Anecdote: in the late 1970s / early '80s the general store in New Abbey sold soft-core porn novels. I walked from the Mains near Loch Arthur to buy one and hid it in a dry stane dyke, far up in the hills. Willy Austin (born late 1890s) farmed the Mains at the time and I recall he confiscated it, presumably so his sheep didn't choke on the yellow plastic bag that it was wrapped in. So it goes.

In addition to soft-core porn, the general store in New Abbey also sold chupa chups lolly pops. And Brandy Alexander ice creams.
