Talk:Navy E Ribbon

The Navy "E" ribbon was originally awarded in 1948. The first or one of the first to win the award was the USS Phillipine Sea CV-47. There were three parts to the award for Combat Readiness. The Crew were authorized to sew the "E" on the right sleeve of their uniform. They were each awarded a $20.00 bonus and, the ship was authorized to paint an "E" on their stacks. Those recipients prior to 1974 are not authorized to wear the ribbon as authorized in that 1974. The SecNav has stated that there are "too many to go back and award the medal/ribbon". The only proof of such an award is contained in our memories and it IS entered in our Service Records. I know these things because I was aboard the PhilSea between 1947-1950. I served on board the USS Manitowoc LST-1180 from 1978-1982 during that time frame the ship had been award it's 5th consectutive Battle E ribbojn, which at that time made her the only ship in the Atlantic fleet to have a GOLD Battle E, are there any other ships that are so honored?? Discrepancy between USS Liberty and Navy E Ribbon articles

The article USS Liberty (AGTR-5) says

"The Liberty's other decorations include the Navy "E" Ribbon..."

and that it was out of service in 1967, decommissioned in 1968, struck in 1970, and sold for scrap in 1973.

The article Navy E Ribbon says it was first established and first awarded in 1976 and only to those "that have won a battle efficiency competition (Battle "E") after July 1, 1974."

Something is clearly wrong here. The Liberty could not have won a competition after 1974 if it was already scraped.

Please correct whichever is wrong.

I have removed the Navy "E" Ribbon from the Liberty's entry as I could find no evidence that it was ever awarded to the Liberty. The ship's entry on the un-official NavSource site has also recently been revised to omit the ribbon.--Mox La Push (talk) 03:13, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
