Longitude and latitude

Mostly by guess work and looking at google maps I have zeroed down to 21.15° N 79.08° E. I cant vouch for its correctness though it does seem all right.

What is Nagpur named after?

Please confirm if Nagpur is named after Nag (snake) or Nagah (Elephants, in sanskrit), who were found in Nagpur and Nag River was their place to quench thrist, bath, and play. It is also said that the Gond King's daughter came to school, St. Joseph's Convent on elephant's back. Please note that Nagpur is officially spelt and pronounced as नागपूर and not नागपुर which is the spelling in hindi, but rarely used in Nagpur even when writing in hindi. Recent changes done to Nagpur's page

Macnol recently did some changes to Nagpur. I ya it is true highly appreciate Macnol's interest in the city but not the changes did to the page. 1) There is unnecessarily wide window has been added to the page which makes the page very bad to scroll while reading. I would suggest resizing window or eliminate it. 2) Why was following information COMPLETELY DELETED? "Nagpur was a scene of great political activity during the freedom struggle. It hosted two annual sessions of the Indian National Congress and the Non Co-Operation Movement was launched in the Nagpur session of 1920. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was founded in 1925 at Nagpur by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. ". This is a very prominant and important aspect known to almost eveyone living in India. 3) I protest against the following line added to the page. ". Vidarbha is the most backward region of Maharashtra. " Please provide some kind of data or link to reliable source of information on internet by some link to support your statement. 4) Please provide information on this page which would about describing the city, its people, culture, history, administration and so on. Please try to avoid something so unimportant as to which trains/buses/planes go and come through Nagpur. I would suggest removing "of which The Vidarbha Express is most popular". Article very badly organized

This article needs some serious revision, both in sentence structure and facts. There are a lot of random facts. The history section is good though, but overall, the article needs a lot of organization. --Wikindian 20:42, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Article flow

The main problem with the Nagpur article is that it contains too many facts and too little coherence. So, the reader is bogged down by the bad flow. This article will require a lot of revision so that it might become "readable."--Wikindian 23:36, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Merging article on Sitabuldi

Reason for proposing for the merger:

• The page on Sitabuldi is very short.
• Requires reader to know about Nagpur, without the context of Nagpur, Sitabuldi, by itself, is not of much interest.

If the merger makes the article on Nagpur too long, it would be better idea to have a separate page on major localities in Nagpur of which Sitabuldi is a section. -anon69.180.9.141 07:20, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I disagree, it should be merged. At least until it is more developped and vcan be moved to it's own article. Until then best to keep it all together. Sfacets 09:37, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

@ Sfacets do you disagree with the merger? If you do disagree, then I am confused because you say that "Until then best to keep it all together.", which implies that the two articles Nagpur and Sitabuldi are together as of now and you want to keep them together. On the otherhand, if you do agree with the merger, then again the statement "Until ..." does not make any sense. I may be confusing something, can you please clarify your point.

btw I was asking for including the Sitabuldi article in the article for Nagpur. That way one won't have to go to a separate page just to read a paragraph or two on Sitabuldi. - anon 69.180.9.141 23:53, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

"Winter Capital" or "Second Capital"

In the introductory text, right in the beginning paragraph of the page, Nagpur has been introduced as the "winter capital" of the state of Maharashtra. As per the government of Maharashtra, I believe, Nagpur is the "second capital" of the state, with the winter session of the assembly taking place here, as well.

"Second Capital" actually indicates that Nagpur is a full-fledged capital of the state, in addition to Mumbai, throughout the year, irrespective of where the assembly session is taking place. So a "second capital" should be higher in stature than a "winter capital", and perhaps, after due referencing this fact can replace the original mention of the city as "winter capital" in the text.

Another interesting fact - The India yearbook published by the government of India every year, does not mention Nagpur as being either the second or winter capital of the state of Maharashtra. It seems that the government of Maharashtra very conveniently overlooked informing the central government (union of states) about the capital status of the city, thereby making sure that Nagpur does not get facilities accorded to a capital city, by the center (eg. Rajdhani express origin point). So "winter" or "second", Nagpur remains a "second-hand" capital. :-(
