Importance

edit

This article has been flagged as possibly not meeting WikiProject Music criteria for importance.

It would be my contention that My Latest Novel are important, for the following reasons :

1. They have a growing audience in the UK, having this year played numerous gigs and the festival circuit in the UK. 2. They have received a large amount of critical attention and aclaim from serious sources[1], most of which focuses on their originality and distinctiveness.

Of course, it may be that this article is premature in terms of broad music-market appeal and record sales, but I don't feel that these criteria should affect a determination of importance.

The fact that they have thus far released only one album does not seem to me to be a sufficient reason for excluding them. There are numerous other examples of artists on Wikipedia who are at the begining of their careers.

I'd welcome other thoughts on this.

As there has been no further input on this, I've removed the importance flag.

I disagree, I don't see where on here Wikipedia:Notability_(music) the band meets these notability standards. Perhaps you can point one out? Metros232 12:29, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, I shall try.
  • Has gone on an international concert tour, or a national concert tour in at least one large or medium-sized country,[1] reported in notable and verifiable sources.
They have toured, and are continuing to tour the UK and other countries in Europe. A brief look at their concert schedule confirms this.
  • Has been featured in multiple non-trivial published works in reliable and reputable media (excludes things like school newspapers, personal blogs, etc...).
As I mentioned above, they have received a large amount of national press coverage from reputable music and general media.
  • Has been placed in rotation nationally by any major radio network.
They have featured on rotation on UK stations such as BBC 6 Music and XFM.
Finally, to quote from Wikipedia:Notability (music)- "Please note that the failure to meet any of these criteria does not mean an article must be deleted; likewise, the meeting of any of these criteria does not mean that an article must be kept. These are merely rules of thumb which some editors choose to keep in mind when deciding whether or not to keep an article that is on articles for deletion."
It would be my strong contention that My Latest Novel pass the rule of thumb test - and that the case is strengthed in the sense that the nature of their press coverage and the growing interest in the band centres around their distinctivness. This is notable. They are a very unusual band, very much at odds with the current trends in UK music, and yet they are increasingly popular and respected.
As a note of general information - I have no vested interest. I am not associated with the band, their record label or their concert promoters. And I am happy to be argued out of my postion. So far however, there has been a simple and simplistic reference to guidelines, rather than any actual argument. --Wastekiller 13:24, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
But no where in the article does that say any of the points you've said it meets with reliable sources. I'm not saying the band isn't notable...I'm saying that the article doesn't say that. The reason we don't think it meets the criteria is because the article doesn't discuss it. I would have no problem with the article if you put what you pointed out in with proper sources and citation. Metros232 13:31, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
That's fair. I shall attempt a re-write tomorrow. --Wastekiller 13:42, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Having tried to realistically meet the criteria laid out in Wikipedia:Notability (music) and failed (idependent sources are not readily available, I'm concluded that this article is premature, and I've listed it for deletion. I'd of course be delighted if anyone could flesh things out sufficiently to save it. --Wastekiller 21:30, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
