Talk:Mumbai underworld

Should this article be called the Mumbai underworld? Imean, tt actually works ostensibly, as long as it is explained that it is akin to New York and the La Cosa Nostra of old. But that doesn't mean that the mob wasn't in Chicago or Las Vegas either. In the same way the 'Indian mafia' isn't exclusively Indian at all (but Pakistani too). I can't count off hand how many Indian/Bollywood films I've seen the mafia explored in (as well as police corruption): Maqbool, Company, a movie with Nana Patekar(!) etc..., but Mumbai is just the center of operations, and the underworld actually sets a good example when it comes to coöperation between Indians and Pakistanis, or it did at one time anyway (that's said ironically btw if you don't have the proper English sarcasm filter installed!). This page deserves a place in WP as much as the Russian Mob, or the Yakuza. I know Indians don't usually like to talk about such matters, and that is exactly why there needs to be some work here. The next time the History Channnel shows "The World History of Organized Crime:India" I'll hopefully remember to come back here and add what I remember. Right now my memory is too hazy. I've come across other things on the Indian mob too , that don't just center around the provocative Bollywood connection - although things like the Salman Khan scandal are titillating, there is much more substance this article could have. A better title would be Crime in Mumbai (along the lines of Crime in New York City). My suggestion would be to move the article there.--Oden 01:41, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

verification

Some newspaper or magazine articles chronicling the events in the article would be nice. Just general expansion is needed on the entire article, how widespread are gangs, how much crime is attributed to them, what is the police response, etc. --Kerowyn 08:47, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

POV

This article reads as a list of muslim criminals in Mumbai, giving the impression that all criminals in Mumbai are muslim. This is not appropriate and displays a bias. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 20:22, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikification

I am going to take some time and Wikify the article a bit. First, I will go through and find out what the actual Hindu vs Muslim situation is in Mumbai. From my research, I seem to recall that the underworld was one place where the Hindu vs Muslim mentality ironically was less important than the clan mentality, so I would be surprised if the majority of criminals in Mumbai were Muslim. Regardless of my personal opinion, however, I will not put anything into the article without a reference. Any help from an informed person who can provide references would be wonderful.
