Requested move 22 December 2020Edit

Not moved. After much extended time for discussion, consensus is more heavily aligned against the proposed move than for it. BD2412 T 05:04, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

Microsoft DefenderMicrosoft Defender Antivirus – The new page title is the current and official name as described in the section § Name changes (sourced from Microsoft). Feelthhis (talk) 16:09, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

This is a contested technical request (permalink). No such user (talk) 14:23, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
  • Procedurally converted to full RM discussion. Just a note that we prefer WP:COMMONNAMEs over "official" names, and this official name sounds rather awkward. No such user (talk) 14:31, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose Per WP:COMMONNAME. I don't predict that the media will start tacking on the "Antivirus" every time Microsoft Defender is mentioned, since it usually goes without saying.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 11:23, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
  • Comment in addition to § Name changes (since I don't get to decide anything):
Ambiguity issue TL;DR: Microsoft Defender is a brand, that spans across a variety of products and services.[1]:q
Long version: under the Microsoft 365 Defender umbrella,[2] there are Microsoft Defender for Endpoint,[3] Microsoft Defender for Office 365[4] and Microsoft Defender for Identity.[5] There are also Microsoft Defender Firewall,[6] Microsoft Defender Security Center,[7] Microsoft Defender SmartScreen,[8] Microsoft Defender Application Guard[9] and Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection.[3]:q All of which are a different product/solution distinct from Microsoft Defender Antivirus. If you wish to violate WP:PRECISION, this is the opportunity! As for the enterprise (shareware) Microsoft Defender for Endpoint,[10] Microsoft explicitly makes the distinction between the two by using the new name.[11]:q[12]:q And care was taken to retroactively rename every instance in virtually all older articles.[a]
As to the WP:COMMONNAME allegations: this renaming proposal doesn't come even close to the examples such as Germany (not: Deutschland) or Aspirin (not: acetylsalicylic acid). How come Microsoft Defender is a commonly recognizable name and Microsoft Defender Antivirus is not? Also: Ambiguous or inaccurate names for the article subject, as determined in reliable sources, are often avoided even though they may be more frequently used by reliable sources. Emphasis added. If anything, WP:COMMONNAME is an argument in favor of this renaming, for precision.
