It's not clear that the surname is Jewish in origin. The last reference just lists surnames that, when in a Jewish family, imply that the family is Sephardi. Even García (asserted Basque origin) is in the list. It could have happened that some Jewish adopted a pre-existing surname (e. g. the same happened later with the Gypsy).
I'm not saying that's what happened, only that the sources cited do not support the article and providing a possible alternative that the same sources could support the same.
Additionally, there is a village called Torremejía (Mejía Tower) and there are accounts of Mexias fighting the Muslim, a Mexia family with a coat of arms, lots of Mejías in America, etc. In all, very unusual things for "New Christians" in the 14th-15th-16th century Spain. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.212.29.91 (talk) 11:34, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
