Talk:Matica srpska

Srpska/srpska edit

It's weird for me to see "Srpska" uppercased in the name when it's obviously written in Serbian, and AFAIR in Serbian personal adjectives are never written uppercased. That's why the Serbian version of their pages always says "Matica srpska" (and in Cyrillic also). For now I'll just redirect the proper Latin spelling to this one. --Joy [shallot] 10:57, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Matica edit

"Matica" means both matrix and queen bee, but in the case of Matica srpska, I am shure it has nothing to do with honey bees. "Matica" is here used in the meaning matrix=source, origin (see: matrix at wiktionary]). Vanjagenije (talk) 18:10, 18 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Matica does not mean matrix. Matrix is spelled "matrica" in serbian.
Matica however has several meanings:

  1. mainstream or main body
  2. female screw, hollow screw, nut screw
  3. queen bee
  4. source, origin

However in this context "Matica srpska" designates the main body of serbian culture and literature. In this case it is used as both "source" and "main body" and is opposed to "diaspora" (see: diaspora). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.237.142.17 (talk) 06:51, 2 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

So you're saying you didn't click the wiktionary link :) The word "matrix" in English is used both for the mathematical meaning and the meaning of 'source'. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 07:33, 2 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
