Mara is a Maa word meaning spotted

edit

Have changed the first paragraph to give the true meaning of Mara - it is not named after the river that runs through it, the river is in fact named after the area. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mponin —Preceding unsigned comment added by 196.201.217.227 (talk) 08:09, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Reserve, not a Park

edit

I've just changed any terms from Park to Reserve as the Mara is a national reserve, not a park. It is also not managed by KWS - instead it is by the two district councils, Trans-Mara and Narok. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mara Lover (talkcontribs) 09:34, 19 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

edit

I've just removed five external links from the page, per WP:EL. Several were blatantly commercial, but there were a couple (the maps, in particular) which I was mildly unsure about. If anyone thinks there's a case to justify them, lets discuss it here and then consider adding them back. Eve Hall (talk) 13:59, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

This Wiki has no real map of the Reserve. I think it would be worth either including a map or adding decent links. Anyone with a decent map? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.101.79.190 (talk) 21:12, 4 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Official spelling of 'Masai Mara'

edit

I undid five reverts from user Maasaimara. It was an obvious attempt to establish an alternate spelling of 'Masai Mara' and therewith justify the spelling in his/her advertisement-link. --R.Schuster (talk) 07:10, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've just changed the spelling back over to Maasai Mara as this appears to be the preferred spelling of both Narok and Trans Mara County Councils, and also appears on the Mara Triangle website as such: www.maratriangle.org . 5th February 2011.

I have changed back the name of the park to Masai Mara, although I couldn't figure out how to change the main title. Maasai is not the official name of the park. It is 'Masai' because it was named in the colonial era and has not been changed. I am an anthropologist and I study the Maasai. I lived 10 miles from the Oloolaimutia gate for a year. That is in Narok county, what used to known as the constituency of Narok South. The Maasai people corrected the spelling of the name of their community, but the spelling of the Mara has not been changed. Every road sign, map, and the ranger station signs all read 'Masai Mara'. It is also on all official documentation. 7.3.15

Cheetah population

edit

I removed a sentence on cheetah population declining due to tourism because the research articles I'm reading all seem to indicate that population decline is due to human encroachment (mostly cattle grazing) and NOT tourism. If someone can find a reputable research citation that says tourists are causing it, we should probably add something back. The only reference I found was on a tour Web site. Preferred spelling of Maasai Mara

edit

The preferred spelling of Narok County Council, the Mara Conservancy and the Kenya Tourism Board is with the double 'aa'.

It's also the way the tribe local to the area spells and pronounces its name.173.73.124.195 (talk) 19:40, 4 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

The Correct Spelling

edit

The correct spelling is with a double 'aa' as per the Narok and Trans Mara County Councils, as per the Kenya Ministry of Tourism, and as per the Mara Conservancy that manage part of the area:

http://www.narokcountycouncil.org/ http://maratriangle.org/maasai-mara http://www.magicalkenya.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=231&Itemid=221

Why does R.Schuster keep reverting the page to the old colonial spelling. Please have respect for our culture and language - even when our language is written in English it is with the double 'aa' spelling.

You can't just copy and paste content from one page to the other; that breaks wikipedia's licensing rules. You need to get consensus on this talk page for the move, then an admin can move the page. GedUK  11:30, 7 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I apologise for breaking the rules, Wikipedia is not the easiest of websites to learn and as you can guess I am quite new here but I do now realise my mistake. I would like for the correct spelling to be used for Maasai Mara National Reserve. The spelling as used by the local Maasai County Councils, by our Government Tourism Website, and by such groups like the World Bank: http://siteresources.worldbank.org/KENYAEXTN/Resources/Tourism_Report-ESW_Kenya_Final_May_2010.pdf

41.80.196.161 (talk) 12:08, 7 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Nonsense. The correct and official spelling used by the Government of Kenya is Masai Mara. Even your link to the World Bank spells it 'Masai'! The Maasai people have a different spelling. It is a colonial era spelling to us 'Masai' but it is also still the official spelling. An actual Kenyan would know this.

The result of the move request was: page moved.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:20, 24 February 2011 (UTC). I've also (I think) sorted out the very unnecessary cut and paste of this page before the move was actioned.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:28, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Masai MaraMaasai Mara — The proposed title is the correct name as used by the governing bodies that manage the area (Narok County Council and The Mara Conservancy It is also the preferred spelling on the officialKenya Tourism Website. The only argument against this move so far is the number of google hits between the two spellings - Masai Mara gets about 1,570,000 results and Maasai Mara gets about 634,000 results, however the quality of these websites should be considered. The double 'aa' spelling of Maasai Mara is used by the examples given above and the World Bank, WWF, and UNEP. The misspelling continues due to the number of tour operators who try to get visitors to their website, but it is respectful to the Maasai culture if the correct spelling is re-established.-- 41.81.6.224 (talk) 05:59, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

The misspelling with 'aa' is mainly proposed by right-wing demagogues. Newly found tour operators and other tourism related enterprises support the spelling with 'aa' too, because company names and internet domains with the correct 'a'-spelling are taken (long time) by established companies or organizations. This is nothing less than the attempt to abuse Wikipedia for political and commercial interests. WP:NPOV, WP:OR. --R.Schuster (talk) 06:38, 18 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm sincerely curious about this, since there is obviously more than meets the eye: why are the articles Maasai people and Maasai language also spelled with 'aa'? And can you point us to some evidence that shows the background of the disagreement, especially that the change is supported by "right wing demagogues"? First Light (talk) 18:55, 18 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hello First Light. There is no statement like "we are right wing demagogues and support the aa-spelling". You have to do some OR on this. But this is just a side aspect. More important is the common spelling, see links above. The burden of proof, that 'aa' is suddenly the right spelling, still lies on the one who proposes the change. Threats to the Mara

edit

With time, it might be a good idea to add other threats such as: poaching, human encroachment, uncontrolled building of tourist camps and lodges and the proposed Serengeti Road. 86.156.207.164 (talk) 14:02, 27 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Would it be a good idea to list films, documentaries and TV programs filmed in the Maasai Mara?
