Name
editShould this be named Marine invertebrates (plural) or Marine invertebrate (Singular) ? eg. Fishes redirects to fish. Any thoughts welcome. Lumos3 (talk) 11:49, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
- it's marine invertebrates.--FUNKAMATIC ~talk 04:24, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
- Marine invertebrates → Marine invertebrate (move) — make it singular, like Invertebrate, Vertebrate, Mammal, Marine vertebrate Whiner01 (talk) 05:48, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
- I don't see it as a big problem. Particularly given the current list-like organization, the plural seems appropriate to me. I don't think it's an issue of whether readers would be able to find the page. --Tryptofish (talk) 19:07, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
List???
editWhy is there a list of examples here? I think this page should just consist of a definition and also why the term is almost meaningless in biological terms. There are many marine invertebrates that become terrestrial or move to freshwater. Most biologists study marine invertebrates only study a taxonomic group like marine arthropods or marine cephalopods. Most (if not all) groups of marine invertebrates are classified with freshwater relatives.--FUNKAMATIC ~talk 04:24, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
- On the one hand, I partially agree with you that text pages tend to be more encyclopedic than list pages. On the other hand, I think it's rather useful to have this particular list, directing, as it does, readers to each of the related specific pages. My suggestion would be to retain the current content, but add the material to which you refer: improve the definition, and add a (sourced) section on the limitations or criticisms of the classification. --Tryptofish (talk) 18:20, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
- Yes. And a few references would be nice... Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:36, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
Prodded for deletion
editAn editor has prodded the article for deletion on the grounds that marine invertebrates is "a useless term to describe all non vertebrates who live in the sea, useful historically but this isnt a historical article. basically just a list of phyla which we have elesehwere". This is a thoroughly eccentric prod which, if intended seriously, should have been preceded by an attempt to prod the article on Invertebrates. If this is a valid reason for deleting the article then we should also delete the articles on fish, shrimp, mackerel... It may be the term is not really a taxonomic term, but that doesn't mean that the term is "useless". The prodding editor needs to explain why there are 130,000 scholarly publications that find the term useful. --Epipelagic (talk) 19:17, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- If you hadn't contested the PROD, I would have. --Tryptofish (talk) 19:30, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
