Redirect target updated edit

Merriam Webster dictionary defined "Marijuana" as an herb / plant or portions of the cannabis plant. I am changing the redirect target to the Cannabis article which addresses the plant and is the main article. Stephen Charles Thompson (talk) 12:16, 2 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Why? Is it not clear from the definition that Marijuana is only a portion of the cannabis plant? --Potguru (talk) 14:32, 7 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Request support for... edit

I think we should merge some of the content on the effects of cannabis to this page. After all, I was able to fully merge the etymology of the word to this page; would anyone mind a move regarding the effects explicitly from smoking the substance to this page? It seems that it would make sense, because people would be able to just look up "Marijuana" and find a full breakdown of the info. in one place. They'll see the benefits, the detriments, and the penalties all in the same area, making personal comparison and fact-finding much easier. Let me know what you guys think! :) მაLiphradicusEpicusთე

  • Support - Any effects that are specific to marijuana (as opposed to other preparations of Cannabis) should be covered in this article, as well as on the Effects of cannabis article. Neelix (talk) 21:30, 28 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Note that I've reverting this forking, and restored the redirect. See the talk page for the target for discussion.Dennis Brown |  | WER 00:52, 29 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Redirect should go to top of Cannabis (drug) page edit

The redirect was recently changed to now point to the Preparations-->Marijuana section about 9 page lengths down from the top of Cannabis (drug). Before that it had pointed to the top of the page for the last two years. I think it should be changed back because:

• "Marijuana" is the most commonly used term for cannabis. I would guess that the majority of visitors to Cannabis (drug) are coming from the marijuana redirect, and it inconveniences a lot of people to have to scroll all the way back to the top to begin reading the article. The Cannabis (drug) page currently averages somewhere around 7,500 visits per day, so a lot of people are being unnecessarily inconvenienced.

• The article states in the very first sentence that cannabis is also known as marijuana. Why then the redirect to way down the page?

Medical marijuana redirects to the top of medical cannabis. Why not the same for marijuana and cannabis (drug)?

As a proposed solution, along with changing the redirect back to the top of the page I would also like to add the following text to the end of the first paragraph of Cannabis (drug):

When cannabis is prepared in the form of dried flowers and leaves of the female plant it is more specifically referred to as marijuana, although the terms cannabis and marijuana are also frequently used interchangeably.

I will be making a note about this on the Cannabis (drug) talk page, since this involves a change to that article, and inviting people to join the discussion over here. --Jamesy0627144 (talk) 17:09, 26 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

If a distinction is rarely made then maybe the difference between the two terms is not even worth pointing out in the first paragraph of the article. The main reason I suggested that was as a possible middle ground for people opposed to changing the redirect back. I'd be fine with just making the redirect change. Thanks for the reply --Jamesy0627144 (talk) 20:27, 26 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
No, "also known as" isn't really drawing a distinction. Nor does the link establish a distinction, IMHO. The fact that we have an article for the word just shows that the subject is popular enough among Wikipedia editors that we were willing to devote an entire article to its etymology. Honestly, if an AfD came up about that article, I'd vote to delete and merge to Cannabis (drug). We're an encyclopedia, not an etymology dictionary. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 20:49, 26 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
I didn't even realize there was a marijuana (word) article that addresses the two terms and that it was linked to in the very first sentence in Cannabis (drug). I think were good then with just changing the redirect and not worrying about adding anything else in the first paragraph. And actually User:Randy_Kryn has already went ahead and done that. --Jamesy0627144 (talk) 03:14, 27 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
