Derivation of name

The derivation I have is "Little market", from the Cornish marghas + byghan, with an earliest recorded form of Marghasbigan in c.1265. this is from Mills, A. D. (1991). I have heard it via a Blue Peter tv programme (1970s) looking at the Cornish lead mines that Jewish slaves were imported by the Romans into Cornwall to work in the mines and that 'the unhappy Jews' (Blue Peter presenter's words) gave the place its name; plausible if one is aware the Hebrew word, marah means bitter, and of Psalm beginning 'By the rivers of Babylon'. It would be interesting to find out if any earlier published sources gave currency to that legend.Cloptonson (talk) 16:35, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
