Iloilo Airport, not Mandurriao Airport edit

The official name of this airport was Iloilo Airport, not Mandurriao Airport. Mandurriao was only the place in Iloilo City where the airport was located. In 2007, the Iloilo Airport was transferred from Mandurriao, Iloilo City to Cabatuan, Iloilo.

If you are going to title this page after the location of the old Iloilo Airport and not the official name, then you should as well title the new Iloilo Airport as Cabatuan Airport, after its current location.

Another alternative to differentiate the two would be to title this old airport as "Iloilo Airport at Mandurriao, Iloilo City", and then title the new Iloilo Airport as "Iloilo International Airport at Cabatuan, Iloilo"

Officially, both old and new airports at Mandurriao and Cabatuan, respectively, are named Iloilo Airport. As proof of that, all you have to do is check the photos and look at the signboards at the front of the old airport in Mandurriao and the new Iloilo Airport in Cabatuan, and you will clearly see "Iloilo Airport" in both.

The airport was stripped of its old official name when that name and title of Iloilo Airport went to the new airport it was replaced with. Case in point, Kai Tak Airport which enjoyed the title of Hong Kong International Airport until the airport at Chep Lap Kok replaced it and took over its title. The name Mandurriao Airport was adopted as per WP:COMMONNAME supported by reliable sources to distinguish it from the Iloilo that we know now.--RioHondo (talk) 17:38, 28 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
You cannot retroactively change the official name of a place. That's impossible to do. That would be like changing its history all the way to its construction. If it was officially called Iloilo Airport up to its closing, then it was the Iloilo Airport up to its closing. After it ceased operations, there was no more airport at Mandurriao to speak of, and calling a non-existent airport Mandurriao Airport is moot and academic. The airport in Mandurriao should only be referred to within the context of its lifetime, which was up to 2007.
If you prefer to title the airport after its location, and not after its official name, then be consistent. At least include Cabatuan in the title of the new airport. For example: "Iloilo International Airport (Cabatuan Airport)"
That should do. --Tumandokkangcabatuan (talk) 08:32, 29 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Regarding reliable sources, the only reference that I can see in this Mandurriao Airport article is a blog. This source is not reliable because its information is grossly inaccurate. It states that the airport was transferred to Santa Barbara. It was not. The airport was transferred to Cabatuan. --Tumandokkangcabatuan (talk) 08:39, 29 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Per WP:COMMONNAME: "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources." Again, as far RS are concerned, the most common reference to this airport in the media is old Iloilo airport in Mandurriao or simply Mandurriao airport. Like the old Cebu airport that was replaced by Mactan-Cebu International Airport has been referred to as Lahug airport after its location, a common practice in naming defunct airports. --RioHondo (talk)
Check this news page. Do they call it Mandurriao Airport? They do not. They call it Iloilo Airport at Mandurriao.

Even your own unreliable source do not say Mandurriao Airport. They call it Iloilo Airport in Mandurriao.

You might as well title the new airport at Cabatuan, Iloilo as "Cabatuan International Airport" then --Tumandokkangcabatuan (talk) 09:54, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
In all cases, Mandurriao district, the location of the old airport, is always mentioned, hence Mandurriao airport whether you like it or not. Old Iloilo Airport or Iloilo Airport in Mandurriao is hardly a correct title as we don't call NAIA as NAIA in Pasay or JFK as JFK in Queens, NY. Please be reasonable. As for Cabatuan International Airport: from Senator Drilon "“They will ask, ‘where is that?’ Why do we need to go into that when in fact the name… will precisely help identify the airport as Iloilo?” There's a reason the IATA code for it is ILO not CBT or whatever. Not even Tomas Confesor Int'l Airport will work, says the senator. Again, WP:COMMONNAME. --RioHondo (talk) 10:17, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Would people in other parts of the Philippines know where Mandurriao is?
As you can very well see, the media don't call it Mandurriao Airport. Only you do that. You are not putting the exact term. You are violating a rule of wikipedia that you are just making one up from putting two and two together. I forgot the rule, but I'm sure knowledgeable wiki editors know what it is.
The official location of the new airport is Cabatuan, Iloilo. Try googling Iloilo Airport. If you insist on titling the old one after its location, then I will also insist on including "(Cabatuan Airport)" in the title of the new airport. Fair?
As in, ILOILO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (CABATUAN AIRPORT)
Tumandokkangcabatuan (talk) 10:28, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
My own proposal in the title of the new airport has Iloilo in it. Yours with regards to the old airport don't. Do you really think other people in the Philippines know where Mandurriao is?
The code for the airport in Mandurriao was ILO, not MAN or MND for Mandurriao. This was my point exactly. You are now providing proof for my side.
Tumandokkangcabatuan (talk) 10:43, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have already put forward a compromise. You can have your Mandurriao Airport title but include Cabatuan Airport in the title of the new aiport. As in, ILOILO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (CABATUAN AIRPORT)

Look at the page information, and the revision history. I was never a contributor to this article. But if you insist, you can always add it to the Articles for Discussion with your proposed name change. See what others and the editors have to say. As far as im concerned, this is the correct title. --RioHondo (talk) 12:17, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
In my experience the most common name is the "Old Iloilo Airport". I have rarely heard it referred to as the "Mandurriao Airport" and it never functioned as an airport once the new so-called Santa Barbara airport opened. I would support changing the name to the "Old Iloilo Airport" especially now that there are buildings going up there. (We will then have a dispute about whether to keep that name or change to whatever Megaworld is trying to call it).
I agree that it is not helpful to talk about the official name. The policy is the common name -- or if you prefer to think about it the way I do -- what name people will enter into Google most often. --Iloilo Wanderer (talk) 07:58, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have yet to see an actual wikipedia article on a defunct airport titled Old X Airport or Former X Airport. Not sure it is a good practice either as it would most likely land in the top google results when people search for "iloilo airport" and just cause confusion with the present airport of ILO. I also don't think it is accurate, as Old Iloilo Airport could also mean the Tiring Air Field a.k.a. Cabatuan Air Field that was also an old airport in Iloilo. Common name for it is Old Iloilo Airport in Mandurriao, always with the district location, to distinguish it from Tiring. And finally, even historically, the airport has been called Mandurriao Airfield or Mandurriao Airdrome even prior to it being called Iloilo Airport. --RioHondo (talk) 12:06, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
"Old Iloilo Airport (Mandurriao Airport)" would be best. That should take care of its official name and its location name. Tumandokkangcabatuan (talk) 08:01, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Same thing. It's still Mandurriao Airport only you added the unnecessary description or old name in the article title. It doesnt have to be complex as this could simply be identified in the intro paragraph. It would be like naming our

Nielson Field
old airport here in Manila as "Old Manila Airport (Nielson Field)" when it could simply be Nielson Field. Actually, i would support renaming it to its original title of Mandurriao Airfield with the contents tweaked to also cover its prewar history as a US and Japanese airdrome, similar to Nielson Field that reverted to its old name when MNL was transferred to the new NAIA. Can you do that? Then we can also write articles for the other old Iloilo airports, like Tiring Airfield, Santa Barbara Airfield, and the original Iloilo Airport which I discovered was at Fort San Pedro?, the hub of Iloilo-Negros Air Express in 1932 or five years before the Mandurriao Airfield was even built in 1937? Im learning a lot from this conversation btw. Iloilo does have a long and rich history of aviation. --RioHondo (talk) 09:40, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
"Iloilo Airport" is not an unnecessary name. It is the official name. Tumandokkangcabatuan (talk) 10:23, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
It WAS. Not anymore. Look, if you're really from Iloilo, you should know these things. Mandurriao Airfield is not anymore officially Iloilo Airport just as Nielson Field is not anymore officially Manila International Airport. Just try to improve the article with my recommendations. --RioHondo (talk) 13:34, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
What airport in Mandurriao are you still talking about? There is no more airport in operation in Mandurriao. Again, if we discuss the airport in Mandurriao, it will only be in the context of its existence, which was up to 2007.
I have already said that I am amenable to Mandurriao Airport in its location and descriptive sense. I am however reacting to your recent saying that Iloilo Airport is an unnecessary term. It is not. It is an important term.
Our house in Mandurriao is near the airport. When I go to the airport terminal back then, I take the shortcut through ricefields. Did you know that somebody was once killed in the airport runway? Nasagasaan ng BAC-111 na lumalanding. For real.

Nice neighborhood. IBP Megaworld just next door. I think the name Mandurriao Airfield came at a time when Mandurriao was still a regular municipality separate from Ilo ilo. I can't find the exact date of the US airfield's construction but this should be in the earlier months of 1937 1 before Ilo ilo became a city that absorbed its surrounding towns like Mandurriao in July 16/Aug 25 1937. --RioHondo (talk) 16:35, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
I am curious as to your interest in Iloilo aviation. Are you Ilonggo? Tumandokkangcabatuan (talk) 12:20, 5 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
