Mexican War

edit

Assuming there isn't a separate article on the Hall carbine, did not the Hall see service during the Mexican War in the hands of American dragoons?--172.190.44.21 (talk) 02:35, 15 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Paper cartridges

edit

I removed a statement saying that a certain unit "discovered that breechloaders were useless in the rain and they would have been better off with muzzle-loaders, because the paper cartridges got soaked" (para), as it doesn't make any sense. Paper cartridges have been issued to troops using muzzle-loaders since before the Revolutionary War. Powder horns are for civilians and men who's government can't afford to issue them with paper cartridges. A infantry soldier equipped per regulations in the Revolution carried a muzzle-loading musket and a box of paper cartridges. The same applied to men in the War of 1812. So having been issued with muzzle-loaders would have made no difference at all. The only thing that would have helped is if they were issued powder horns (which would be a hindrance the times when it WASN'T raining, which is why they invented paper cartridges), and if they had been issued powder horns, they could have loaded a Hall rifle with them just as easily as you can load a muzzle-loader, and would still have had the advantage of a rifled barrel, which you wouldn't get from an infantry muzzle-loader of that era..45Colt 05:09, 1 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
