There is no source for the meaning of the name. When I try to google it I find a lot of different explanations of the meaning (for example: irish and means "from the hollow" or "little hollow", Gaelic meaning "hollow", chinese meaning "little hollow", or Scottish Gaelic for "Small, round hill"). I can't find a reliable source for any of the claims. The book "Collins Babies' Names" by Julia Cresswell claims it is from a Scottish place name meaning "little hollow". Can anyone reject or confirm any of these meanings? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.210.248.193 (talk) 19:45, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
- I added some sources. Seems like it is derived from a diminutive of a Gaelic word meaning "hollow"; hence baby-name books and websites giving "little hollow". So you were on the right track all along.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 07:16, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
