Talk:Local Government (Gaelic Names) (Scotland) Act 1997

Re "change of name of local government area"

edit

I imagine change of name of local government area is a reference to the purpose of section 23 of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973, and not part of the name of the act. Laurel Bush 18:27, 13 January 2006 (UTC).Reply

That is indeed the title of section 23, rather than the title of the Act (see [1]). This is the conventional way of citing section titles. As I recall, section 23 was also used to change The Borders to Scottish Borders--George Burgess 18:47, 14 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Na h-Eileanan Siar: is it Gaelic or, now, both English and Gaelic?

edit

Name change seems to imply that a new name of Gaelic origin becomes the English name: the change does not create two names, one for use in Gaelic, the other in English; it displaces the previous English name. Laurel Bush 11:08, 16 January 2006 (UTC).Reply
