Language(s) / Dialect(s) dispute edit

During these last days, there has been an edit war between users who believe that dialects should not be specified and those who do. The oversimplification of languages in the list not only limits what information will the users read, but it shows partiality and lack of local context & understanding from some users towards non-English productions & contexts. Most of the disputes are contained in the article Pluricentric language, where several examples are listed, not limited to:

- Arabic (Najdi, Palestinian, Tunisian, Moroccan...)
- Chinese (Mandarin, Min, Hokkien...)
- Bulgarian vs. Macedonian
- German (Standard, Austro-Bavarian, Swiss)
- Malay vs. Indonesian
- Hindustani languages
- Serbo-Croatian (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Montenegrin...)
- Kurdish (Kurmanji vs. Sorani)

Dialects are mentioned in the great majority of former lists in cases where mutual intelligibility is questioned: Croatian submissions are listed in Croatian, Hongkonger films are in Cantonese, Moroccan movies in Moroccan Arabic... Some languages which may or may not be considered dialects have also been included in past years: Isan, Kaqchikel, Ixil, Sarnami Hindustani, Taiwanese Mandarin, Swiss German, Sicilian, Balkan Gagauz Turkish, Ayacucho Quechua... if we follow those users' logic, we should erase all of these data as they're not referring to the language / language family they're derived from (Thai, Mayan languages, Hindi, Chinese languages, German, Italian, Turkish, & Quechua languages respectively).

There is not even enough consensus between linguists in what constitutes a language and what is a dialect. I propose to better rename the category from just "Language(s)" to "Language(s) / Dialect(s)", in order to appease those who are vehemently against these changes. One of the main points that opposing users have mentioned is why we don't include "American English, Latin American Spanish or Québécois". Firstly, differences between English, Spanish and French varieties are mainly based on small phonetic and lexical changes which do not affect their mutual intelligibility. Secondly, there is not a single variety of Latin American Spanish, but it varies between countries, however, they're not enough different to be considered dialects, reflecting lack of understanding of the topic among these users.

I'm open to discuss this and listen to your opinions, but I think we should still allow the specification of languages where spoken differences are notable and may confuse the readers. Emi6219 (talk) 23:48, 15 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Final Submission List Released edit

Hi, I'm no good at editing but the wrap just announced the 89 film longlist:

https://www.thewrap.com/89-films-oscars-international-race/

This includes submissions from: Cameroon - "Half Heaven" Cuba - "Nelsito's World" Dominican Republic - "Cuarencena" Saudi Arabia - "Alhamour H.A."

the list is missing Hong Kong, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan's submissions so presumably they were disqualified?

I hope someone can make these changes to complete this page! Bagatha (talk) 00:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
