Feedback from New Page Review process

I left the following feedback for the creator/future reviewers while reviewing this article: Thank you for this informative new article. I am a bit confused by the "Year" column. Is this the year that a dispute was raised or first litigated? I happen to know a lot about Led Zeppelin's misdeeds in this area, and the "Year" column may cause confusion between the date of an accusation and the date of a final settlement, which could be many years later..

I've been slightly confused by this also. Because the lead mentions that some disputes are still ongoing, I've taken the year to signify the start of a dispute – but I don't know whether that's necessarily the best approach.

Another thing to add is that there appears to be many songs omitted from the list. (I appreciate it's early days, of course.) Several come to mind for me; it's probably best to let Category:Songs involved in plagiarism controversies be a guide. JG66 (talk) 03:25, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

The year is the year of the dispute. But other dates are not entered all the time. So perhaps the list needs another year column? It used to look like this Lightburst (talk) 03:28, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

Chart Inclusion

it is interesting that kiss and elvis costello gave their plagiarists a pass, but it begs the question: what is the criteria for being included in this chart? if just some "perception" of similarity is enough (i.e. actual litigation not necessary), where then are "kodachrome" v "peacekeeper" and "theme for the masses" v "total eclipse of the heart" -- 2 of the more egregious examples of song theft out there.

also, if "creep" was found to have ripped off "the air that i breathe" how do they then have standing to sue "get free"?! is it a matter of radiohead's version being ruled "partially stolen and partially original" or are we talking music theft in one case and lyrics theft in the other? 66.30.47.138 (talk) 16:22, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

I was thinking the same thing. Olivia Rodrigo's song "Brutal" was accused of stealing a guitar riff from Elvis Costello's "Pump it Up", but Costello has said he's "fine with it". It doesn't seem like there's any kind of legal action being pursued. I think this article needs to reflect that. Infinity Project (talk) 18:45, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

Several are Media or Fan Claims

An example is Olivia Rodrigo's "Brutal," with respect to Elvis Costello's "Pump It Up."

When a Twitter user said Rodrigo's song was "pretty much a direct lift," Costello replied: "This is fine by me. It's how rock & roll works. You take the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy. That's what I did." Costello included hashtags for Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues," which Pump It Up borrowed from; and Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business," which STH borrowed from. I'm not sure these need to be removed from the list (though they do need a reliable source, which most seem to have), but the label "Not Settled" is definitely inappropriate, as it implies legal proceedings do exist. "No Legal Action" perhaps. Walkersam (talk) 21:47, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

Remove Images

The big block of artist photos badly breaks this article's layout in small desktop windows, and makes it inconvenient to get to the real content in the mobile app. I would also argue they add nothing to this page (the subject is the songwriting after all, not the personal stylings of the songwriters).
