Point?
editWhat is it that is hoped to be achieved with this list? If the aim is to list all snake species, then it will eventually contain some 2,700 entries. If all subspecies are to be included, I would think that at least 1,000 more entries can be expected. However, if this article is an attempt to list all the common names of all snake species and subspecies, then it will become a very long list indeed and will never be complete. This is because many species (particularly those in the Unites States) often have many English common names (e.g. berg adder and mountain adder, a.k.a. the Cape mountain adder). --Jwinius 12:44, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Revision
editA while back, I noticed this page was going nowhere (see comment above). More recently, I discovered that the Amphibians and Reptiles portal was linking to it, which was unfortunate since this list would never be able to give a proper overview. Then, this evening I was inspired by List of amphibians, which the Amphibians and Reptiles portal also links to. Luckily, the suborder Serpentes is not nearly as large, so drilling down to the genus level didn't take more than a few hours. Plan
editWhile corresponding with User:Smb1001, I came up with a plan for this article that involves the integration of several other types of lists into this article. Eventually, it will contain the following:
- A list of all snake families, subfamilies and genera along with their common names (if known). We have this.
- Lists of lists of species and subspecies by family or subfamily. Example: List of pythonid species and subspecies. Sometimes, these lists may have to be subdivided further. E.g., "List of elapid species and subspecies" would be too long, so we could split off sublists for large genera like Micrurus (coral snakes).
- Lists of common name categories by family and subfamily. For example: Category:Rattlesnakes by common name and Category:True vipers by common name. These will have to be reordered and renamed, but you get the idea.
- Lists of synonym categories by family and subfamily. For example: Category:Rattlesnakes by taxonomic synonyms and Category:True vipers by taxonomic synonyms. Again, these will be modified.
It may look ambitious, but I don't think anything like this exists yet and it'll be really cool when it's finished!! Such a system will also have the advantage that if people use these red links to create new snake articles, the resulting articles will fall neatly within the taxonomy we follow, often with readily available geographic range information from the genus articles. --Jwinius 21:37, 11 September 2007 (UTC) any one start of this can be changer —Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.108.51.73 (talk) 08:47, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
