Oh, Miss Liza!

edit

Nice article. I've started an article on Li'l Liza Jane, which I think should be added for 1916, but I didn't want to risk messing up the rather daunting references. -- Infrogmation (talk) 12:26, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'll see what I can find. Thanks for having a look. Jafeluv (talk) 15:41, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Added here. There wasn't really much information I could find, so it's pretty short. If someone knows any additional sources, feel free to add to it. Jafeluv (talk) 12:07, 13 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Question

edit

Who determines which songs are included in the list - is it common knowledge, or expert wikipedian? How can I verify? Green Cardamom (talk) 15:16, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Reliable sources determine which songs can be included in the list. See the second sentence of the intro: This list includes tunes written before 1920 that are considered standards by at least one major fake book publication or reference work. So if you have a tune that's missing from the list that fits those criteria, feel free to add it to the article (just remember to source it to a reliable source with <ref> tags). It's an incomplete list, and improvements are always welcome. If someone tells you that you should avoid editing this or any other article because it's up to some "expert Wikipedian" to decide what content is included and which is not, be sure to tell them to back off. Umm, did I answer your question? :) Jafeluv (talk) 22:29, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I see now, thanks. It's an impressive amount of effort to go through all those references and find the standards, and very useful for someone seeking to learn more about jazz culture. Green Cardamom (talk) 22:40, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Coon songs

edit

WHO IS THE RACIST COMEDIAN? 'COON SONG' removed. Offensive, outdated and we do not need to refer to such great music with such distasteful names just because it was accepted at the time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.19.90.133 (talk) 23:50, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

In USA in the pre-1920 era, attitudes were common that I think most people today will recognize as deeply racist. "Comedian"? I see nothing funny about it. What were called "Coon songs" were one of the most important aspects of the early 20th century music of the USA, which had a culture which as a whole was deeply enthralled by African-American music while at the same time widely held deeply racist attitudes about African-Americans. Edit reverted; please try to learn a bit about history before trying to censor it. Thanks. Infrogmation (talk) 01:31, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
