Unpublished naming: 34338 Shreyaskar edit

In June 2020, an anon editor insisted that asteroid (34338) 2000 QM216 (MPC; JPL) has been named "34338 Shreyaskar" based on this screenshot. This kind of confusion has happened before (see most recent examples). This, however, is irrelevant, as the name of any small Solar System body needs to be officially published before it can be used on Wikipedia. The Minor Planet Center (MPC) explicitly says: "Names become official when they are published in the Minor Planet Circulars. Note that the CSBN condemns the preannouncement of names, even if any such preannouncement indicates that a name is only a proposal." (Src). Therefore, anyone who has an issue with a minor-plant name allegedly missing on Wikipedia needs to make sure that the name is being officially published by the MPC in the first place. So please contact the Minor Planet Center (https://minorplanetcenter.net/), and refrain from arguing on Wikipedia whether or not our encyclopedia should include such unofficial name. More claims of recently named minor planets: (34380) and (34831) edit

Minor planets (34380) and (34831) do not have official names either. I strongly recommend to contact the MPC (see above) for a publication of the namings. Rfassbind – talk 01:44, 12 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
