Mayor and Council edit

Question, is the mayor simply another counciller who gets a vote like all other councillers, or is he or she a seperate branch of government, you know, an executive mayor? I don't believe this is made explicitly clear on any pages having to do with Halifax and its government. Does the mayor get to choose/appoint heads of the department like in an executive mayor system, or does the full council choose department heads? --Criticalthinker (talk) 10:56, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

According to the Halifax Regional Municipality Charter, the mayor is defined as the "member of Council elected at large to be the chair of the Council." The mayor presides at council meetings, may sign legal documents on behalf of the municipality, and has all the same responsibilities and duties that Provincial legislation would normally assign to the mayor or warden of any other Nova Scotia town, county, or other municipality. The mayor may monitor the administration of the government, and may advise council, but it seems that ultimately the simple majority council would always prevail with or without the assent of the mayor. I don't see any evidence of a separate executive branch within any of the municipal governments in Nova Scotia.142.134.23.74 (talk) 19:31, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
