Translation Notes edit

I made the translation tables. Here are some notes concerning the translations:

  • This table is meant to translate from:
Japanese to English
English to Japanese
Japanese to Chinese
Chinese to Japanese
  • This table is not meant to translate from:
Chinese to English
English to Chinese

The Japanese to Chinese translations were translated directly, i.e. the Japanese kanji was translated directly to the Chinese character. The Chinese and Japanese names for herbs are basically a kind of "common name" rather than a "scientific name". Just like in English, each herb can have several common names in Japanese and Chinese. When an herb name was borrowed from Chinese to Japanese, one of the common names was borrowed. But, the common name used most often in Chinese may not have been borrowed.

So, I'd be grateful if someone could check the English to Chinese translation and see if there is a more common name in Chinese. If the Japanese borrowing does exist in Chinese, then it'd be nice to keep it. But if the Japanese borrowing is really uncommon in Chinese, then it'd be nice to get a more common Chinese name.

I have already changed a couple of uncommon Chinese names:

Name Common Name Kanji Katakana Pinyin Chinese (T) Chinese (S) Genus species
Araliae Cordatae Radix Japanese spikenard root 和羌活 ワキョウカツ tǔ dāng guī 土當歸 土当归 Aralia cordata
Araliae Cordatae Rhizoma Japanese spikenard rhizome 独活 ドッカツ tǔ dāng guī 土當歸 土当归 Aralia cordata
Glehniae Radix Cum Rhizoma glehnia rhizome 浜防風 ハマボウフウ běi shā shēn 北沙參 北沙参 Glehnia littoralis
Quercus Cortex sawtooth oak bark 樸樕 ボクソク xiàng shí 橡實 橡实 Quercus acutissima
Sinomeni Caulis et Rhizoma orient vine rhizome 防已 ボウイ qīng fēng téng 青風藤 青风藤 Sinomenium acutum

Also, this is a list of herb names for Tsumura products. Tsumura also may have chosen a common name that is not used most often in Japanese. I guess this is a limitation of the page. Some day it'd be nice to make an herb list that is not dependant on Tsumura. Dreamingclouds 01:57, 29 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Rikkunshito edit

It can't be easily found the original Japanese name, but this traditional medical herb is told to:

  • be widely "used in Japan for the threatment of upper gastrointestinal symptoms of patients with functional dyspepsia and gastroesophageal reflux disease, chemoterapy induxed dyspepsia in cancer patients, and dyspeptic symptoms of postgastrintestinal surgery patients" ([1])
  • stimulate the endogen production of plasma ghrelin both in mice and humans ([2],
  • to suppress "cisplatin-induced anorexia in humans" related to chemoterapy (PMC325420).
  • both of the latter two points (doi 10.1093/annonc/mdw390.41).

Recovering the original Japanese name, it can be hopefully listed in the WP article. Hope this helps and someone else would like to help.Philosopher81sp (talk) 21:59, 5 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
