Criteria for inclusion

edit

One of the criteria for inclusion in these lists is that the person was notable "for reasons other than their longevity". This means that they were notable before they got old. Being the "last surviving..." is insufficient. It has now been nearly 80 years since WWII ended and over 20 years since Wikipedia started. This is plenty of time for someone to have been recognized as notable enough for their own article. Herbert I. Stern's wartime achievements were not recognized as being significantly noteworthy for an article until he became the oldest living West Point graduate i.e. because of his longevity. As for the WP:OTHERSTUFF claim re: Thomas Franklin Vaughns, I have removed him on the same grounds, unlike Charles McGee (pilot), he is notable only for his age. Is it because he didn't reach General? Several soldiers on here reached General or Admiral, yet have lesser actions of heroism, and or combat command leadership in wartime. Why is a higher rank of service held by someone while not in combat seen as more notable in your view than someone who commanded soldiers while in combat. Your criteria is, it has been long since World War II and since Wikipedia was created, they would have a page already if the actions of their service were notable. Thats not true. Many notable soldiers are without Wikipedia pages because nobody took the time to make them, not because their actions weren't notable. Also, several soldiers on this list do not have have any articles about them written before the individual became old. That would suggest you are not following the criteria of the list yourself. 82298NATE (talk) 23:50, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Stern is not mentioned anywhere else in English Wikipedia (that I could find), making his article an orphan. His unit is only mentioned in the order of battle for the 84th Division (United States). There is no mention of Stern or his unit in the Battle of the Bulge. In the division history it is mentioned that some of its troops liberated 2 satellite concentration camps, again neither Stern or his unit are mentioned. In short, Stern had an active career but did nothing more than many other soldiers who also have no Wikipedia article. I doubt anyone would have bothered to create such an article if he hadn't become the oldest living West Point graduate. Whether that status is significant enough to justify an article is debatable (someone might take it to Afd, but I'm not going to bother). The bar for WP:N is pretty low and there are always editors willing to scrape around to justify an article, sometimes they succeed, but not always (it may take years for someone to notice and the bother with an Afd, though it is more likely for an orphaned article). As for inclusion here, as I stated above, there is no expectation that he would have an article if it were not for his becoming old enough to have become noticed, and therefore he should not be included. Unless there is consensus that he should be included he stays out. If you are not happy with that, you can always make a WP:RFC. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 02:34, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
