Talk:List of York University people

Name of article edit

Neither the article name or intro makes it clear that this is York Uni, Canada, as opposed to say York Uni, England. This is quite essential, I believe. Brittle heaven (talk) 21:22, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

The university in England is known as the "University of York". 130.63.14.33 (talk) 20:30, 25 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, but it's not a distinction that everyone knows about or even acknowledges. Most people I know who have attended refer to it as York University, as indeed do The Guardian on the University of York page (Tony Banks citation 69). Brittle heaven (talk) 01:29, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Nevertheless, we must adhere to proper naming conventions. The two uni's have distinct names, so should their subsidiary articles. An explanatory note and cross-link at the top of the article may be appropriate. Franamax (talk) 01:31, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Criteria for inclusion edit

What is the barrier for inclusion here? Who gets on this list? All these names have been added in good faith, but how do we know the list is accurate? Some points:

  • All entries should have working wikilinks to an article that has a verifiable source showing the person as alumnus/faculty.
  • OR have an external source link demonstrating notability at a prominent news or government site, which also states affiliation to York U.
  • What is to be done with faculty no longer affiliated with York - remove or annotate?
  • Which people have sufficient notability to be included on the main page, at York_University#Noted_alumni_and_faculty? See the related talk thread at that article.
  • And of course, there is still the vexed issue of graduates of Osgoode Hall before its merger with York U in 1969. These have no affiliation at all with York and I believe should be removed from this listing. As an example, Edward Wentworth Beatty died a decade or two before York U was anything more than a patch of farmland and IMO should not be present in this article.

Comments are welcome! Franamax (talk) 01:31, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sourcing edit

I'm planning on re-organizing this messy article, and providing some sources for the people listed here. If anyone would be willing to help in providing sources (googling, etc.), I would really appreciate that. --Therexbanner (talk) 22:56, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
