Forgive the spam, but I'm trying to round up wikipedians with an interest in international military history to help work out some conventions for the names of military units. If you are interested in that sort of thing, please visit Wikipedia:Naming conventions (military units) and join the discussions on the talk page. — B.Bryant 17:47, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Note on medieval Muslim flags

edit

Please do not add flags to the medieval Muslim states in al-Andalus and North Africa, unless they are in still in use at their corresponding main articles. I'm still not sure yet about the Nasrids of Granada, but the flags for the earlier Andalusi states (Emirate of Córdoba, Taifas, etc) and all the pre-modern "Moroccan" or North African states (Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, Saadis, etc) are all unsourced, based on unreliable sources, or (in the Almohad case) disputed and problematic. See talk page discussions here and here, among others, which resulted in the removal of these flags from the relevant main articles a while ago, for those reasons. Many others have never been accepted and have been repeatedly removed from other articles. In short, we don't know what the flags of these pre-modern states looked like, if indeed they had standard flags at all. I recommend being cautious about flags of other medieval African and Middle Eastern states too; many of the supposed flags in Commons are pure fiction or WP:OR. Taifa of Badajoz

edit

RobertJohnson35

Hi, where in the article does it state that "the wars and battles of the taifa of Badajoz should also be in the list". Thanks. Javext (talk) 03:12, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

"This is a list of wars and armed conflicts fought by the Kingdom of Spain, its predecessor states or in Spanish territory". The article includes the Taifa kingdoms as predecessor states RobertJohnson35 (talk) 08:14, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sections

edit

Instead of dividing the article by stages of Spanish history, wouldn't it be better and more comfortable to divide it by centuries? It is very difficult to navigate this article, for example, to search for a specific war in the medieval section when there are more than 100 wars. Article needs splitting (and other clean up)

edit

I was going to comment above, but this could perhaps serve as an informal WP:SPLIT proposal.

This list article has ballooned well beyond a reasonable size and scope. "List of wars involving Spain" clearly should not be going back all the way to the Roman Republic and Carthage in the first millennium BC. Indeed, it shouldn't be expected to cover anything beyond the formation of modern "Spain" in the 15th century, even with the words "predecessor states" in the lead. Anything before that period should be moved into other articles. Compare with other obvious topics like List of wars involving France or List of wars involving the United Kingdom to see what a reasonable approach looks like. Even if the scope and criteria weren't an issue, the sheer length of the list demands some splitting. It may require a bit of discussion beforehand, but I don't think it would be hard to find existing articles and create new ones to accommodate the material.

Other concerns: there are close to 300 unmarked bluelinks that lead to either the Spanish or the Catalan Wikipedia (plus a handful to Arabic and maybe others), including numerous cases where an English Wiki equivalent for the topic exists. This is clearly unhelpful for readers here. The majority of the content is also unsourced. These issues need to be addressed too, either before or after splitting.
