What are the selection criteria for this list?

With this edit, Rublamb re-inserted a large number of red links into this list, with the comment "that guideline [about writing the article first] is not yet established for this article; inclusion in Wikipedia is not required for notability". What is required for this (or any) list is that the inclusion criteria be unambiguous, objective, and supported by reliable sources. Currently no criteria for inclusion are specified, and the references that were subsequently added are as loose as the university itself putting a person on their own list of "outstanding alumni" or being listed as a professor at another university. These are not sufficient to show notability per WP:PROF. In the absence of any clear standards for inclusion on this list, it risks becoming a dumping ground.

I propose that the selection should be determined by either having a Wikipedia article written, or at least a reasonable expectation (based on reliable sources) that such an article would survive AFD. What you propose is the criteria I use when editing this type of list. (My comment was responding to your edit summary saying that people must have a Wikipedia article to be included in this list of notables, which is not correct by Wikipedia guidelines. However, editors of some lists have agreed to that rule.). I did not create this alumni list but moved it from the main article on the university, organized it into sections, and added the links. Yes, there are a lot of red-linked names. I did a quick pass at finding sources, to confirm that the red-linked individuals have the stated notability/profession (the connection to the university was provided already by an earlier editor). Finding these individuals from the U.S. in Chinese language sources can be challenging as prior editors reversed/Westernized some names, in addition to usual spelling variations when converting Chinese into English. I removed any individuals who could not be confirmed. I did not dig deeply into Taiwanese newspapers, television news, or other print publications which is why the sources I added are not lofty (but should be reliable). However, American university presidents and national minsters/secretaries of education, etc. are typically notable enough for a Wikipedia article. All of the red-linked names in this article fall under the category of university presidents or national cabinet-level government positions; the exception being two noted scholars. If you feel strongly that these individuals will lack Taiwanese sources for notability, then let's move them to the talk page for later research, rather than deleting them. There are other editors involved who appear to read Chinese and are better qualified to tackle sources than me. Rublamb (talk) 01:25, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
