Color code and asterisks

On the Free agents section we have:

• color codes on the top of the free agents table

	Denotes unsigned players whose free-agent rights were renounced
	Denotes sign and trade players
	Denotes player who is signed after buyout
	Denotes signed player to Training Camp who failed to make opening day roster
	Denotes signed player whose contract is Non Fully Guaranteed on opening day
	Denotes player signed to 10-day contract

• asterisks (notes) on the bottom of the table

* Player option
** Team option
*** Early termination option
**** Previously on a two-way contract

Can we combine or integrate these two method of extra information?

Also we need to add symbols to the color-coded cells in order to follow MOS:COLOR "Ensure that color is not the only method used to communicate important information. Especially, do not use colored text or background unless its status is also indicated using another method, such as an accessible symbol matched to a legend, or footnote labels. Otherwise, blind users or readers accessing Wikipedia through a printout or device without a color screen will not receive that information."

The colour coding began last year with a single editor and was expanded this year. Personally I'd keep the first two, indicate buyouts and 10-day contracts in the team columns of the table, and ditch the other two as there's already a section for camp cuts and contract guarantees are often not officially mentioned, just like other terms. As for asterisks at the bottom, the first three can be ditched once a player's been signed, the fourth can go in the team column, and a case could be made for adding colour coding or language for RFAs who are signed to an offer sheet. Draft pick signing

Also can we do something about the following table? At first read, it looks like Şengün signed his rookie contract with the Thunder (and then he was later traded to the Rockets) and Kai Jones signed his rookie contract with the Knicks (and then he was later traded to the Hornets), which are not the case here. - MT (talk) 05:51, 9 August 2021 (UTC)

I have several suggestion for this:

A. Ignore the draft team and the trades completely, and only include the team that are currently holding the player's draft rights when the signing was made. This is simple, and the rookie contract signing does not involve the draft team at all. However, in every draft board and NBA records, Şengün will always be OKC's draft pick.

B. Emphasize the team that are currently holding the player's draft rights when the signing was made, while the information about the draft team and trade are written in smaller fonts (explained in footnotes), similar to 2011–12 list. Full disclaimer, I was involved on the 2011–12 list.

I personally like both B and C options, as it includes all the information needed for both casual readers or avid NBA fans. Option C is easier to understand but there will be a lot of team names repeated since 39 of 61 draft rights were not traded. Feel free to suggest any new formats. Summer leagues

Considering splitting 'Free agents' into its own article

For several months, this article is one of the largest articles of wikipedia, with around 550kB. The largest section, free agents, is about 228kB big, and is probably large enough to be split into its own article. zsteve21 (talk) 22:15, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

That's because the rest of the series is not as large as this article. Yes, there is nothing broken in this article, but in future seasons, if there are even more transactions than this season, there might be problems fitting every transaction into one article. zsteve21 (talk) 13:33, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

The free agents section is a very reasonable section to split into its own article. Not only is it about half of the article, it is quite distinct from the rest of the article's content. Onetwothreeip (talk) 07:37, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

Lowest pick vs. worst pick

Since I botched an edit summary...

Lowest pick can be read as the lowest number, not the lowest in draft order. Worst has an unambiguous meaning and is a comparative, not a pejorative.

Official NBA press releases now use more favorable rather than higher or better when describing a traded pick; they also use if when most favorable would be more correct language.
