I propose merging Aviator hat into Leather flying helmet. Both share most information, any difference may be explained in one paragraph. Leather flying helmet includes the better contents, thus merge in this direction! Alossola (talk) 20:33, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

This mighty ChatGPT text has a few flaws: It describes the same thing twice, mincing words to differenciate. It places one item in times where "cockpits are heated" while both are attributed to early open cockpit aviation.

Most of all, it doesn't include any proof. Any highschool kid could make it up. I'm inclined to disregard it!

Back to the proposal: Both lemmas describe leather headgear worn by aviators in the early days, but they look neither like a hat nor a helmet. The helmet lemma shows a development to more sophisticated characteristics like radio comms and oxygem supply but they started as the very same item. Merge them!

As a side note, the German de:Fliegerkappe, to me, is the more appropriate description: aviator's cap, while it shows pictures which deserve the notion hat. Alas, I'm not the one to invent a new translation ;) Alossola (talk) 04:48, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

BTW2: Aviator hat is defined as a cap, and the quoted article by Graham Rood, very extensive on helmet development from 1900 to 1990, only mentions streetwear hats, twice, from the time when cars were faster than planes. Aviation headwear is always helmet. Alossola (talk) 12:41, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
